Description : Deciduous tree, 10–30 m tall, not buttressed, bark cracked to shallowly fissured. Indumentum shortly fine tufted tomentose and pale brown puberulent on twigs, buds, stipules, petioles, lower surface of leaves, inflorescences and flower buds. Buds ellipsoid, to ca 5 mm long. Stipules oblong, 5–6 mm long. Leaves elliptic to lanceolate, ovate to ovate-oblong, 4–20 by 2–12 cm, sometimes glabrous on both surfaces; turning yellow before falling; dried leaves reddish brown above, pale brown below; base broadly cuneate to rounded or slightly cordate; apex obtuse to rounded, pointed at tip; midrib flattened above; secondary nerves 12–22 on each side, arching very near the margin; domatia pore-like, pubescent; tertiary nerves densely scalariform; petioles 1–1.5 cm long. Inflorescences 4–17 cm long, dense, usually doubly or irregularly branched; second branches to ca 7 cm long; branchlets to 4 cm, bearing 4–8 flowers; bracteoles minute, early caducous; flower buds ovate-lanceolate, 0.7–1 by 0.2–0.3 cm; pedicels 1–2 mm. Calyx lobes broadly triangular, 1–1.5 by 1–2 mm. Petals linear, 1–1.2 by 0.2–0.3 cm, white to yellowish, base concave. Stamens ca 30; filaments ca twice as long as anthers; anthers with 4 pollen sacs, oblong, ca 0.3 mm long; connective-appendages filiform, slightly exceeding the anthers, reflexed, barbate with 2–4 bristles. Ovary and stylopodium ovoid, slightly constricted at middle, ca 1.5–2 by 1 mm, pubescent; style subsessile; stigma obscurely lobed. Fruiting calyx lobes wing-like, saccate at base, enclosing to ca half of the nut, light green when young, densely short fine pubescent; 3 longer lobes 4–5 by 0.7–0.8 cm; 2 shorter lobes 2–3.5 by 0.2 cm; fruit pedicels stout, ca 2 mm long. Nut ovoid, ca 1–1.5 by 0.8 cm, densely pale pubescent; style remnant to ca 5 mm long.

Distribution : Myanmar (type), Laos, Cambodia, S Vietnam.


Ecology : Deciduous dipterocarp and oak-pine forests, to 1,300 m alt. Flowering: January–May; fruiting: April–May.


Vernacular : Teng (เต็ง); nao nai (เน่าใน)(Mae Hong Son); ngae (แงะ)(Northern); chik (จิก)(Northeastern); pra-chat (ประจั๊ต)(Khmer-Buri Ram); pra-choek (ประเจิ๊ก)(Khmer-Buri Ram, Surin).
