Description : Tree to 40 m, distinctly buttressed; bark smooth, fine scaly. Indumentum fine scurfy scales and short, fine pubescent on twigs, buds, stipules, petioles, inflorescences and Fruiting calyx. Buds ovoid, ca 3 by 3 mm. Stipules ovate, 3–4 by 3 mm. Leaves oblong to lanceolate, 4–11 by 2–3.5 cm, minutely pubescent on lower surface, reddish brown above when dry; base acute to obtuse; apex acute to cuspidate; secondary nerves 10–14 on each side; domatia absent; tertiary nerves loosely scalariform; midrib depressed above; petioles 1–1.5 cm long, densely pubescent to glabrescent. Inflorescences 3–7 cm long, singly branched; branchlet to ca 2 cm long, 4–5 flowers; flower buds ovoid, ca 5 mm long, densely sericeous, sessile. Calyx lobes broadly ovate. Petals lanceolate, strongly contorted, pale yellow. Stamens 15, in 3 whorls; filaments tapering to apex; anthers with 2 pollen sacs, broadly elliptic; connective-appendages filiform, ca twice as long as anthers. Ovary and stylopodium pyriform, shortly fine pubescent; style slender, columnar, ca equal to ovary and stylopodium length. Fruiting calyx lobes wing-like, narrowing towards base, thickened, enclosing nut only at base, dark red, tinged yellow-green when young; receptacle thickened, 3–7 mm high; 3 longer lobes 5–7 by 0.8–1.2 cm, base narrow; 2 shorter lobes 3–4.5 by 0.3–0.5 cm; sessile. Nut narrowly ellipsoid, shortly tomentose, 2–3 by 0.8–1 cm; style remnant to 5 mm long.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia (Penang – type), Sumatra, Borneo.
Ecology : Evergreen forests, hillsides or ridges, ca 300 m alt. Flowering: unkown; fruiting: July–October.
Vernacular : Kalo dum (กาลอดำ).
