Description : Tree, 30–60 m tall, buttresses spreading to ca 2 m tall; bark shallowly to V-shape fissured. Indumentum shortly fine pale brown tufted tomentose with peltate scales on buds, stipules, twigs, lower surface of leaves especially on nerves, midrib above, petioles, inflorescences and flower buds. Buds ovoid, ca 5 mm long. Stipules oblong, 0.5–1 by 0.3–0.4 mm. Leaves elliptic, ovate to ovate-oblong, 5–16 by 2.5–7 cm, with minute red glands on lower surface; base broadly cuneate to rounded; apex acute to short acuminate; midrib depressed above; secondary nerves 10–16 on each side; domatia scale-like, pubescent, frequently with prominent line along midrib and secondary nerves especially in young trees; tertiary nerves densely scalariform; petioles 1–2 cm long. Inflorescences singly to doubly branched, 5–15 cm long; second branches to 7 cm long; branchlets 1–2 cm long, bearing 6–10 flowers; bracteoles elliptic, 7–8 mm long; flower buds ovoid to oblong, 3–5 by 2–2.5 mm, subsessile. Calyx lobes deltoid-ovate, densely tomentose; 3 outer 2–2.5 by 1.5–2 mm, 2 inner ca 1.5 by 1 mm. Petals lanceolate-falcate, 5–8 by 2 mm, pale yellow, tinged pinkish or whitish at base. Stamens 15, in 2 whorls; inner filaments to ca 2 mm long; anthers with 4 pollen sacs, subglobose, ca 0.2 mm long; connective-appendages filiform, ca as long as anthers, reflexed. Ovary ovoid, 0.5–1 mm in diam., tapering to style, 1.2–2 mm long, stylopodium absent; stigma obscurely lobed. Fruiting calyx lobes wing-like, saccate at base, thickened, constricted above the neck, enclosing the base to ca half of the nut, greenish-yellow, occasionally tinged red when young, sparsely pubescent; 3 longer lobes 6–10 by 1–1.5 cm; 2 shorter lobes linear, 1–4 by 0.1–0.3 cm; fruit pedicels stout, to 1 mm long. Nut ovoid, 1.3–1.5 by 0.7–1 cm; style remnant ca 2 mm long.


Thailand : PENINSULAR: Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat.


Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra (type), Java.


Ecology : Evergreen forests, to 1,000 m alt., occasionally found at edges of peat swamp forests. Flowering: January–October; fruiting: October–December.


Vernacular : Kalo khao (กะลอขาว), pha yom daeng (พะยอมแดง), saya daeng (สยาแดง)(Narathiwat, Yala); tayom (ตะยอม)(Songkhla); ma-ran-ti-tem-ba-ya (มารันตีเต็มบายา), sa-ra-ya-ta-ma-kho (สะระยาตะมาฆอ)(Malay-Narathiwat); tem-ba-ya (เต็มบายา)(Malay-Yala).


Notes: Galls are occasionally present, subglobose to ovoid, smooth or spiny.
