Description : Tree to 40 m tall, buttressed, bark closely and shallowly, irregularly fissured. Indumentum densely short fine tufted tomentose on young twigs, buds, stipules, petioles, inflorescences and flower buds. Twigs with reddish brown lenticels. Stipules oblong, 1.5–2 by 0.5–0.7 cm. Leaves elliptic-oblong to oblong, 7–12 by 3–5 cm, densely pubescent and scabrous on lower surface with minute red glands; apex acuminate, tapering to ca 1 cm long; base broadly cuneate to obtuse; margin slightly revolute; midrib densely pubescent, depressed above, prominent below; secondary nerves 11–14 on each side, arching near the margin, prominent below, sometimes with large scale-like domatia, pubescent; tertiary nerves densely scalariform, distinctly tufted tomentose; petioles 0.7–1 cm long. Inflorescences 5–7 cm long, unbranched to singly or doubly branched; secondary branches to 1 cm long; branchlets bearing 3–8 flowers, lax; bracteoles ovate or elliptic, 4–7 by 2–4 mm long, concave; flowers slightly fragrant, subsessile, buds broadly ovoid or conical, 4–6 by 3–3.5 mm, apex obtuse. Calyx lobes ovate-lanceolate, 1.5–2.5 by 1.7 mm. Petals oblong, ca 8 by 3 mm, contorted, white to cream, margin crenate, slightly fragrant. Stamens ca 15, in 2 whorls; filaments 1–2 mm long; anthers with 4 pollen sacs, subglobose, 0.3–0.5 mm in diam.; connective-appendages slender, ca as long as anthers or slightly longer, reflexed. Ovary and stylopodium oblong-pyriform, constricted at middle, ca 2 by 0.8–1 mm, densely pubescent, glabrous near base; style slender, ca 2 mm long, glabrous; stigma obscurely lobed. Fruiting calyx lobes wing-like, oblanceolate-linear, saccate at base, thickened, enclosing ca half of the nut, dark pinkish red when young, sparsely pubescent; 3 longer lobes 7–9 by 1–1.5 cm; 2 shorter lobes to 3 by 0.2–0.3 cm; fruit pedicels 1–1.5 mm long. Nut ovoid, 1.2–1.5 by 0.7–0.9 cm, tomentose; style remnant apiculate.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo (Sarawak).
Ecology : Evergreen forests, 450–550 m alt. Flowering: February–April; fruiting: July–September.
Vernacular : Phayom nok khao khon (พะยอมนกเขาขน).
Notes: Shorea dasyphylla differs from S. parvifolia by leaf characters (elliptic-oblong to oblong, 7–12 cm long, secondary nerve 11–14 vs ovate to ovate oblong, 5–9 cm long, secondary nerves 9–12) and young fruiting calyx lobes (dark pinkish red vs light pink).
