Description : Tree to 50 m tall, buttressed; bark shallowly to deeply fissured. Indumentum densely puberulent with cream to reddish brown peltate scales or with whitish scurfy scales on buds, young twigs, stipules, petioles, lower surface of leaves, midrib above, inflorescences and flower buds. Buds ovate to lanceolate, 0.5–1.5 cm long. Stipules oblong to lanceolate, 1–3.5 by 0.3–0.7 cm. Leaves lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 3–12 by 1–3.5 cm, with sparse minute red glands on lower surfaces; base cuneate or obtuse; apex acute to acuminate; midrib depressed bove; secondarynerves 12–16 on eachside; domatia absent; tertiary nerves densely scalariform; petioles 1.5–2.5 cm long. Inflorescences singly to doubly branched, 2–9 cm long; second branches 2–5 cm long; branchlets 0.5–1 cm long, bearing 8–12 flowers; flower buds ovoid, 3–5 by 1.5–3 mm; bracteoles orbicular, concave, 2.5–5 mm diam. Calyx lobes ovate, 1–1.7 by 1–1.5 mm, 2 inner with abruptly acute apex. Petals linear-lanceolate with acute apex, cream-yellow, tinged white at base, ca 0.5–1.2 by 1.5 mm. Stamens ca 15; filaments ca 2 mm long, broad in lower half with short, adaxial spur; anthers with 4 pollen sacs, subglobose, ca 0.2 mm long; connective-appendages bristle like, slightly exceeding the anther, reflexed. Ovary and stylopobium ovoid, ca 1.5 by 1 mm, tomentose; style columnar, ca 0.5 mm long; stigma obscure. Fruiting calyx lobes wing-like, saccate at base, thickened, enclosing ca half of the nut or slightly more, reddish when young, sparsely pubescent; 3 longer lobes 4.5–7 by 0.8–1.5 cm; 2 shorter lobes, 1.5–4 by 0.2–0.5 cm; fruit pedicels 1–2 mm long. Nut ellipsoid to ovoid, 0.8–1.5 by 0.6–1 cm, tomentose; style remnant apiculate.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia (type), Sumatra, Borneo.
Ecology : Evergreen forests, locally common especially on ridges, 150–1,000 m alt. Flowering: May–July; fruiting: July–September.
Vernacular : Saya daeng (สยาแดง)(Narathiwat, Yala); saya lueang (สยาเหลือง)(Pattani, Yala); ma-ran-ti-ya-ret (มารันติยาเรด)(Malay-Satun); sa-yo-mai-ko (ซาโยไม๊เก๊าะ)(Malay-Yala); sa-ra-ya-me-ro (สะระยาเมเราะ), sa-yo-pra-no (ซายอปราโนะ)(Malay-Narathiwat).
