Description : Tree, 20–40 m tall, stem frequently quite twisted; bark irregularly fissured, becoming scaly, lenticellate. Buds ovoid, minute, densely pubescent to glabrous. Young twigs glabrous, lenticellate. Stipules linear, ca 2 by 0.3 mm. Leaves ovate to ovate-lanceolate, falcate, 5–14 by 3–6.5 cm, glabrous to glabrescent; base cuneate to broadly cuneate, slightly asymmetrical; apex long acuminate; midrib slightly raised to flattened above; nervation scalariform, 8–12 on each side; domatia frequently present, cavity-like, glabrous or minutely pubescent inside; tertiary nerves densely scalariform; petioles 1–1.5 cm long. Inflorescences 3–10 cm long, densely white pubescent, doubly branched; branchlets 1–3 cm long, bearing 4–10 flowers; flower buds ovoid, 4–5 by 2–3 mm. Calyx lobes densely pubescent outside, 2 outer elliptic or ovate with obtuse apex, 2–3 by ca 1.5 mm; 3 inner ovate to ovate-lanceolate with acuminate apex, 2–2.5 by 1.3–1.5 mm. Petals falcate-oblong, 3–5 by 1–2 mm, cream to white or pale yellow; pedicels stout, ca 1 mm long. Stamens 15, in 2 whorls; filaments 0.8–1 mm; anthers oblong or ovate-oblong, ca 0.5 mm long; connective-appendages ca as long as anthers. Ovary ovoid, 1.8–3 by 0.5–1 mm, stylopodium indistinct, punctate or glabrous, attenuate to columnar style; style 0.7–1 mm long. Fruiting calyx lobes sparsely to densely pubescent; saccate at base, thickened, elliptic, 4–5 by 3–4 mm; 2 lobes wing-like, 3–6 by 0.7–2 cm, light green when young; 3 shorter lobes ovate with acute apex, 4–7 by 2.5–4 mm; fruit pedicels ca 1 mm long. Nut broadly ovoid to subglobose, 6–8 mm in diam., glabrous to densely pubescent with small scurfy scale-like hairs; style remnant ca 2 mm long.

Distribution : Bangladesh, Andaman Islands, Myanmar (type), Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Upper Peninsular Malaysia.


Ecology : Dry evergreen and evergreen forests, usually found by streams, occasionally found in beach forests, edges of peat swamp forests and by streams in mixed deciduous forests, up to 900 m alt. Flowering: December–April; fruiting: April–July.
