Description : Tree, 10–25 m tall, occasionally with stilt roots; bark smooth. Buds minute, pubescent. Young twigs glabrous or velutinous, sometimes lenticellate or resinous. Stipules obscure. Leaves thinly coriaceous, ovate-oblong to ovate-lanceolate, 12–24 by 4–9 cm, shiny above, glabrous on upper surface, glabrous or velutinous on lower surface; base cuneate to rounded, somewhat asymmetrical; apex long acuminate; midrib slightly raised above; nervation scalariform, 8–10 on each side; domatia absent; tertiary nerves loosely scalariform-reticulate; petioles 2–2.5 cm long. Inflorescences 5–15 cm long, singly branched, glabrous or glabrescent; branchlets 1–3 cm long, bearing 3–8 flowers; flower buds ovoid, 5–7 by 2.5–3 mm; pedicels stout, ca 1 mm long. Calyx lobes 2 outer broadly ovate, ca 3 by 2.5 mm, apex acute or obtuse, densely pubescent outside and at apex inside, margin ciliate or entire; 3 inner ovate, 3–3.5 by 2.5–3 mm, glabrous, margin ciliate. Petals falcate-oblong, 0.8–1 by 0.3–0.4 cm, white, tinged pinkish on one side, margin ciliate. Stamens 15, in 2 whorls; filaments 0.5–0.7 mm long; anthers subglobose, ca 0.3 mm long; connective-appendages ca 4 times as long as anthers. Ovary and stylopodium slender hourglass shaped or pyriform, 3.5–4 by 1 mm, glabrous; stylopodium ca 2 mm long, slightly swollen, tapering to style; style 0.4–0.5 mm long. Fruiting calyx lobes glabrous to sparsely pubescent, light green when young; saccate at base, thickened, elliptic or ovate, 0.7–1.2 by 0.6–1 cm; 2 lobes wing-like, 4.5–14 by 1.5–3.5 cm; 3 short lobes slightly expanded, lanceolate to linear with acuminate or obtuse apex, to 3 by 0.5–0.7 cm; fruit pedicels stout, ca 1 mm long. Nut ovoid to oblong-ovoid, 1.5–2.3 by 0.8–1.3 cm, glabrous; stylopodium remnant 2–3 mm long.


Thailand : PENINSULAR: Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani, Phangnga, Krabi.


Distribution : Myanmar (Mergui – type).


Ecology : Evergreen forests, by streams or on hillsides, to 300 m alt. Flowering: January–March; fruiting: April–May.


Vernacular : Mo ran (หมอราน)(Krabi).
