Description : Tree, 20–40 m tall, sometimes with stilt roots; bark smooth, becoming scaly. Indumentum pubescent with peltate scales, sparsely so on young twigs, buds, stipules, inflorescence and calyx lobes. Young twigs glaucous. Buds ovoid, ca 1–2 mm long. Stipules linear-lanceolate, 1–1.5 by 0.25–0.8 mm. Leaves elliptic to broadly ovate, 5–8.5 by 2.5–5 cm, glabrous, turning brown before falling off, dried leaves brown; base broadly cuneate to rounded; apex caudate, 0.7–1.3 mm long; nervation dryobalanoid, main nerves 8–11(–13) on each side, visible on both surfaces; domatia absent; intermediate nerves present; tertiary nerves reticulate; midrib raised above; petioles 0.8–1.3 cm long. Inflorescences to 5 cm long, singly branched; branchlets 1–2 cm long, bearing 2–6 flowers; flower buds ovoid, 2–2.5 by 1.5–1.8 mm; pedicels 0.5–1 mm. Calyx lobes 2 outer ovate with acuminate apex; 3 inner suborbicular, 1.5–2 by 1–1.5 mm, rounded or with mucronate tip, margin slightly fimbriate or entire. Petals falcate-lanceolate, 4–6 by 1–1.5 mm, creamy or white, apex acuminate, margin ciliate. Stamens 15, in 2 whorls; filaments 0.4–0.6 mm long; anthers subglobose, 0.2 mm long; connective-appendages 1–1.5 times as long as anthers. Ovary broadly ovoid to subglobose, 0.5–0.8 by 0.6 mm, glabrous; stylopodium absent, narrowing gradually to style; style ca 0.2 mm long. Fruiting calyx lobes glabrous; narrow, thickened at base, to 5 by 4 mm; 2 lobes wing-like, 3–5 by 0.6 –1.4 cm, light green when young, turning brown; 3 short lobes ovate with acute apex, 4–9 by 2.5–7 mm; fruit pedicels ca 2 mm long. Nut broadly ovoid, 5–8 by 3–7 mm, glabrous; stylopodium remnant stout, to 2 mm long.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia (type), Borneo.


Ecology : Evergreen forests, hillsides or ridges, 100–300 m alt. Flowering: April–July; fruiting: July–September.


Vernacular : Mata kuching (มะตะกูจิง), me-ra-wan (เมราวัน)(Malay-Songkhla); khian rak (เคียนราก).
