Description : Tree, 15–30 m tall, with stilt roots; bark smooth, becoming rough to scaly, frequently lenticellate. Indumentum pubescent on young twigs, stipules. Buds ellipsoid, minute, ca 1 mm long. Stipules linear, to 2 mm long. Leaves coriaceous, elliptic, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 5–9 by 1.5–4 cm, glabrous; base cuneate, symmetrical; apex subcaudate, to 1.5 cm long; margin subrevolute; nervation dryobalanoid, main nerves 9–12(–14) on each side (to 18 in saplings), intermediate nerves present; domatia absent; tertiary nerves reticulate-scalariform, rarely reticulate, hardly visible; midrib depressed above; petioles 0.8–1.2 cm long, glabrous or glabrescent. Inflorescences 2–3 cm long, singly branched, glabrous or glabrescent; branchlets ca 1 cm long, bearing 2–5 flowers; flower buds ellipsoid, ca 2.5 by 1.5 mm; pedicels 0.5–1 mm long. Calyx lobes broadly ovate, acute, 1–1.5 by 1–1.3 mm, glabrous, margin sometimes ciliate. Petals falcate-lanceolate, 3–4 by 1 mm, dark red. Stamens 15, in 3 whorls; filaments 0.4–0.6 mm long; anthers subglobose, ca 0.25 mm; connective-appendages 2–2.5 times as long as anthers. Ovary and stylopodium hourglass shaped, 1–1.5 by 0.5–0.6 mm, papillose towards apex, tapering below style; style 0.3–0.4 mm long. Fruiting calyx lobes glabrous; thickened at base, narrowly deltoid, to 4 by 3 mm; 2 lobes wing-like, 4.5–7 by 0.5–1 cm, reddish pink when young; 3 short lobes ovate, 0.5–1.3 by 0.3–0.7 cm, with short apical wings to 5 mm long; fruit pedicels 1–2 mm long. Nut ovoid, 5–9 by 5–7 mm, glabrous; stylopodium remnant truncate, 0.6–1 mm long.


Thailand : PENINSULAR: Surat Thani, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Trang, Satun.


Distribution : Myanmar (Tenasserim – type), Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo.


Ecology : Evergreen forests, lowland to hillsides or ridges, 50–700 m alt. Flowering: September–December; fruiting: January–May.


Vernacular : Sanai (ไสน)(Trang); khian rak (เคียนราก), takhian rak (ตะเคียนราก), takhian khao (ตะเคียนเขา)(Peninsular).
