Description : Tree, 20–30 m tall, with stilt roots; bark smooth, becoming fissured. Young twigs glabrous or glaucescent. Stipules linear-lanceolate, to 2.5 mm long. Leaves thinly coriaceous, ovate to broadly ovate, 5–8 by 3–4.5 cm, waxy glaucescent on lower surface; base cuneate; apex caudate; nervation dryobalanoid, main nerves ca 8 on each side, indistinct, lower nerves curved, arching to margin; domatia pore-like, pubescent; tertiary nerves reticulate, hardly visible on both surfaces; midrib raised above; petioles 1–1.7 cm long, glabrous or glaucescent. Inflorescences to 7 cm long, glabrous to puberulent, singly branched; branchlets 1–2 cm long, bearing 2–5 flowers; flower buds ovoid, ca 3 by 1.5 mm; pedicels ca 1 mm long. Calyx lobes ovate, ca 1.5 by 1 mm, puberulent to glabrous outside, margin fimbriate, 2 outer with acuminate apex, 3 inner minute mucronate. Petals linear-lanceolate, ca 4 by 1 mm, apex acuminate, cream. Stamens 15; filaments 0.5–0.7 mm long; anthers broadly oblong, ca 0.25 mm long; connective-appendages ca 2–2.5 times as long as anthers. Ovary and stylopodium pyriform to hourglass shaped, ca 1.5 by 0.5 mm, glabrous or puberulent towards the apex; style ca 0.3 mm long. Fruiting calyx lobes saccate at base, ovate, to ca 4–3.5 mm, slightly thickened; 2 lobes wing-like, 3–4 by 0.7–1 cm, reddish when young, veins 5; 3 short lobes ovate, 5–7 by 3 mm, slightly shorter than the nut; fruit pedicels ca 1 mm. Nut ovoid, 6–9 by 4–5 mm, glabrous; stylopodium remnant apiculate, to 1 mm long.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo (type), Sumatra.
Ecology : Lowland evergreen forests, hillsides or ridges, to 600 m alt. Flowering: May–September; fruiting: December–January.
Vernacular : Ma-ta-ku-ching (มะตะกูจิง)(Malay-Pattani); Takhian khao (ตะเคียนเขา)(Yala).
