Description : Deciduous tree, 15–40 m tall. Indumentum pubescent and shortly tufted tomentose on twigs, buds, stipules, inflorescences and flower buds, or most parts glabrous. Twigs very stout. Buds ovoid, ca 1–2 by 1 cm. Stipules enlarged to 13 cm long. Leaves broadly elliptic to ovate, 12–70 by 10–50 cm, glabrescent on both surfaces, or pubescent on lower surface; base cordate; apex obtuse; secondary nerves 12–15 on each side; midrib flattened above, prominent below; petioles 3.5–12 cm long, sparsely pubescent or glabrous. Inflorescences 5–25 cm long, singly to doubly branched; branchlets to ca 15 cm long, bearing 5–7 flowers; flower buds 1.5–2.5 cm long; pedicels 1–2 mm. Calyx tube ca 1 by 0.8 cm, keeled above; 2 longer lobes 1.5–2.5 by 0.2–0.5 cm; 3 short lobes 2–4 mm long. Petals 2.5–3 by 0.5 cm. Stamens ca 30; filaments ca 2 mm long; anthers 5–7 mm long; connective-appendages ca half as long as anthers. Ovary ca 3 mm in diam. Nut subglobose, 1.5–2.5 by 2–2.5 cm including calyx tube; calyx tube with 5 projections in upper half, glabrous to glabrescent; 2 longer lobes 9–15 by 2.5–4 cm; 3 smaller lobes 1–2 by 1.5 cm, revolute, almost back to back; fruit pedicels to ca 5 mm.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Tak, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Nakhon Sawan; NORTH-EASTERN: Phetchabun, Loei, Sakon Nakhon, Khon Kaen; EASTERN: Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani; SOUTH-WESTERN: Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi; PENINSULAR: Phangnga.
Distribution : Bangladhesh (type), Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, S Vietnam.
Ecology : Deciduous and pine deciduous dipterocarp forests, to ca 1,300 m alt. Flowering: February–July; fruiting: March–December.
Vernacular : Phluang (พลวง), Tueng (ตึง), kung (กุง)(Northern, Northeastern); khuang (ควง)(Phitsanulok, Sukhothai); khlong (คลอง)(Khmer-Buri Ram, Surin); phlong (พลอง)(Suai-Surin).
