Description : Tree to 40 m tall. Indumentum pale brown tomentose hairs and reddish brown peltate scales on buds, young twigs and lower surface of leaves. Stipules linear-lanceolate, ca 5–7 by 1 mm. Leaves elliptic, lanceolate to oblanceolate, 5.5–10 by 2–4 cm, glabrous above, sparse reddish brown scales on lower surface; base obtuse; apex acuminate to cuspidate, tip 0.5–1 cm long; secondary nerves 10–14 on each side, obscurely raised above, intramarginal loop indistinct (in Thailand); tertiary nerves reticulate, indistinct; midrib depressed above; petioles 1.5–2 cm long. Inflorescences 7–13 cm long, lax, pale brown tomentose; branchlets bearing 3–7 flowers. Flower buds ovoid, ca 4 by 3 mm; pedicels ca 1 mm long. Calyx lobes tomentose; outer 2 ovate-lanceolate with obtuse apex, 1.5–2 by 7 mm; inner 3 triangular with acute apex, ca 1 mm long. Petals elliptic, ca 4 by 3.5 mm, pale yellow, glabrous. Stamens 15, subequal; filaments ca 0.5 mm long; anthers oblong, ca 2.5 mm long; connective-appendages mucronate, acute. Ovary with discoid stylopodium, ca 0.5 by 1.8 mm, sparsely pubescent; style columnar, 2–2.5 mm long, minute pubescent; stigma 3–lobed. Fruiting calyx tube sparsely pubescent; 2 longer lobes, 9–13 by 1–1.5 cm; 3 smaller lobes 1–1.5 by 0.2 cm; fruit pedicels ca 3 mm long. Nut 1–1.5 cm in diam., slightly cracked, pubescent to glabrescent outside, pubescent inside; style remnant ca 3 mm long.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia (type), Sumatra, Borneo.
Ecology : Evergreen forests, 150–900 m alt. Flowering: May–June; fruiting: October.
Vernacular : Krabak daeng (กระบากแดง), bak kliang (บากเกลี้ยง); mala (มาลา)(Narathiwat).
