Description : Herb, to 2 m tall; stems erect, branched above, branches ending in inflorescences. Leaves: radical leaves sometimes persistent at flowering, oblanceolate in outline, to 50 by 15 cm, lyrate-pinnatifid, apex acute or acuminate, margins sinuate, dentate, terminal segment sagittate, to 20 by ca 18 cm, lateral segments 2–4 pairs; petioles winged, 7–15 cm long; upper leaves gradually reduced to a long narrow petiole. Inflorescences in large panicles, with many capitula; peduncles 1–2 cm long, slender, 2–3 bracteoles. Capitula ca 2.5 cm diam. at flowering; involucres tubular, ca 10–12 by 4 mm; phyllaries 2- or 3-seriate, margins purple, inner 8, uniseriate; receptacle areolate. Florets 11–13 per capitulum, bisexual; ligules white or pale purple, angular-obovate, ca 7 by 2 mm, ray-teeth and stigma purple. Achenes lanceolate, nearly beakless, 3–3.5 mm long, weakly ribbed, purple; pappus ca 7 mm long, white.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son (near Mo Paeng Falls, Doi Chong), Chiang Mai (Doi Suthep – syntypes of Lactuca parishii: Hosseus 454 -BK E M P; Hoet That to Muong Khu, Doi Inthanon, Pangbo-Khun Khong, along route 109, from Fang to Chiang Rai, Mae Sao Watershed Management Station, Doi Chiang Dao), Chiang Rai (Doi Tung), Lampang (Doi Khun Tan), Phrae (Mae Krai), Tak (Wang Tao); NORTH-EASTERN: Loei (Phu Kradueng), Khon Kaen (Phu Khiao); SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi (Khao Kamphaeng, Sisawat, Tham Nam).
Distribution : Myanmar (type), China (Yunnan), Vietnam.
Ecology : Roadsides in dry dipterocarp forests, bamboo thickets and evergreen forests, 300–1,500 m alt. Flowering: October–December.
Vernacular : Chim kung (จิ้มกุ้ง)(Chiang Mai); ya bang (หญ้าบั้ง)(Chiang Mai).
Notes: C. Shih & N. Kilian in Fl. China 20–21: 227 (2011) noted that this species is very similar to Paraprenanthes yunnanensis (Franch.) C.Shih, and may be conspecific with it.
