Description : Shrub or small tree to 6 m tall; young branches slender, glabrous or hairy, turning glabrous. Leaves spiral, elliptic, lanceolate-oblong, elliptic-lanceolate or ovate, variable in shape and size, 3–8 by 1.5–4 cm, chartaceous to coriaceous, glabrous; base obtuse or subrounded; margin serrate-crenulate; apex acute or acuminate; midrib and veins subprominent on both surfaces; veins 6–8 on each side; petiole 2–4 mm long, glabrous to pubescent, grooved above. Inflorescence an axillary raceme near apex of branches, 2.5–8 cm long, up to 20-flowered; peduncle to 12 mm long, hairy; bracts 3–4, at base of peduncle, broadly ovate, ca 1 mm long; floral bracts foliaceous, oblanceolate or elliptic, 3–6 by 1.5–2 mm; bracteoles 2, linear, to 2.5 mm long, hairy, usually persistent or deciduous. Flowers white or whitish-pink, slightly fragrant; pedicels 2.5–5 mm long, usually hairy. Calyx tube cup-shaped, 1–1.5 by 1–2 mm, hairy; calyx lobes triangular, narrowly acute to acuminate, 1–1.5 by ca 1 mm, margin entire to fimbriate, densely hairy outside, (sub)glabrous inside. Corolla tubular-urceolate, 5–7 by 2.5–4 mm, slightly 5-ridged, pubescent outside, sparsely hairy inside; lobes triangular, recurved, ca 1 mm long. Filaments 2–2.5 mm long, with long white hair; anthers oblong, 0.8–1 mm long, with or without 2 short spurs; tubule cylindrical, 1.5–2 mm, opening by apical pore. Styles 5–6 mm long, hairy at base; stigma truncate; disc densely grey pubescent. Fruits globose, turning purple to dark purple; 4–5.5 mm in diam., with dense grey hairs at the apex; infructescence with or without leaflike bracts. Seeds minute, flattened, shape irregular, 0.8–0.9 by 0.3–0.4 mm.

Distribution : India, Myanmar, Indochina, China, Korea to S Japan (type), Indonesia.


Ecology : Beach forests, open montane forests, 50–500 m alt.


Vernacular : Thing thuat (ทิ้งทวด), hua waen (หัวแหวน), chana (จะนา)(Peninsular).
