Description : Shrub or small tree, 1–3 m tall; stem and branches covered by reddish-brown hairs; bark smooth, brown. Leaves spiral, elliptic-ovate, oblong-ovate, obovate or oblanceolate, 1.8–5 by 0.5–2.5 cm, coriaceous, with white or brown hairs on both surfaces; base cuneate; margin entire; apex acute or obtuse; midrib distinct on lower surface; veins 4–5 on each side, anastomosing; petiole 2–6 mm long. Flowers red; 2–6 in subumbel on the (sub)terminal branches; floral bud ovoid, 4 cm long; bracts spathulate, 0.9–1 cm long, with reddish brown hairs. Calyx 3–5 mm long, 5-lobed, lobes lanceolate, unequal, green, covered by white or reddish-brown hairs. Corolla funnel-shaped, 3.5–5 cm long, 4–5 mm in diam.; tube 2–2.5 cm long; 5-lobed, oblong, rounded, 2–2.5 by 1.5 cm, with dark red spots on the 3 lower lobes, glabrous. Stamens10, unequal, 2–5 cm long; filaments red, white pubescent in the lower half; anthers ca 2 by 1 mm, dark red or dark purple. Ovary ovoid, 4–5 mm long, 5-locular, densely hairy; styles 4–5 cm long, glabrous; stigma dark red. Capsules ovoid, 0.8–1 cm long, with dense brown hairs.
Thailand : NORTH-EASTERN: Loei (Phu Thong, Phu Ruea, Phu Kradueng, Phu Luang), Khon Kaen (Phu Wiang).
Distribution : S China, Japan, Vietnam (type), Laos, the Philippines.
Ecology : Scattered in open areas near streams in lower montane forests, 1,000–1,600 m alt. Flowering: January–April.
Vernacular : Kulap daeng (กุหลาบแดง)(Loei).
