Description : Deciduous to semi-evergreen shrub to moderate-sized tree, to 7 m tall; young branches terete, often pubescent turning glabrous; buds 4–8 by 2–4 mm. Leaves ovate or elliptic to slightly obovate, 5–15 by 3.5–8.5 cm; base rounded to cordate, or widely cuneate; margin slightly revolute; apex acute to acuminate; abaxial surface sometimes papillose or glaucous; midrib prominent beneath; veins 7–12 pairs on each side of midrib, secondary veins clearly prominent beneath; petiole 5–15 mm long. Inflorescences 6–20 cm long, usually with 2–4 large, leaf-like bracts 2–8 cm long near base; peduncle and rachis hairy to subglabrous; rachis usually ridged; pedicels 2–5.5 mm long, hairy to glabrous. Calyx lobes ovate to triangular, 2.5–5 mm, hairy to subglabrous. Corolla tubular, 6–9 by 2.5–3.5 mm, hairy outside; lobes triangular, 0.8–1 by 0.8–1 mm, apex obtuse, recurved. Filaments 5–9 mm long, with 2 spurs near the apex, ca 0.5 mm long. Styles 6–8 mm long; stigma obtuse. Capsules usually subglobose to globose, 2.5–4.5 by 3.5–5.5 mm, with 5 pale quite to sometimes only slightly thickened sutures that in dehiscence remain attached to and adjacent to the valve.
Thailand : Common in Northern and North-Eastern Thailand.
Distribution : Nepal (type), India, Pakistan, Myanmar, S China, Indochina, Peninsular Malaysia.
Ecology : In dry deciduous, oak-pine forests and open montain forests, 800–2,500 m alt.
Vernacular : Mao daeng (เม้าแดง)(Chiang Mai).
