Description : Flowering shoots to 200 cm tall, glabrous except for labellum and column. Pseudobulbs insignificant, hidden by the bases of the foliage leaves, ovoid, 2.5–6(–8) cm long. Foliage leaves 4–5, lanceolate-oblong, acute, 30–105 by (4–)6–20 cm; petioles (9–)15–25(–38) cm long. Inflorescences lax, arising from the pseudobulb base; peduncles mostly longer than 50 cm; sterile bracts 6–10, lanceolate-oblong, acuminate, (2–)4–6 cm long; rachis (4.5–)15–30 cm long, 6- to 20-flowered; floral bracts persistent or caducous, to ca 50 by 15 mm. Flowers nodding, with sepal and petal insides reddish-brown and their outsides white, labellum pale purple with darker veins and pink or mauve apical rim, column white; flowers reported as fragrant. Sepals ovate-lanceolate, acute or acuminate, 41–58(–63) by 9–16(–17.5) mm. Petals ovate-elliptic, acute, 40–55(–58) by 8–18 mm. Labellum weakly 3-lobed, obovate, acute or truncate, more or less hairy in the lower part, basal 3 mm fused with the column, 37–55 by 25–43 mm; mid-lobe ovate-oblong, obtuse, distinctly protruding, 20–25 mm wide; side lobes erect and enveloping the column; disk ornamented by 3 obscure keels; spur cylindric, apex mostly entire, 5–8(–9) mm long. Column sparsely hairy especially at the base and on the anther, 19–21 mm long. Ovary (including pedicel), (25–)28–48 mm long. Capsule ellipsoid, shortly pedicellate, pendent, to 55 by 17 mm.

Distribution : Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, China (type), Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sunda Islands, Borneo, Sulawesi, Maluku, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, N & E Australia (Queensland), New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands.
Ecology : Terrestrial in open swampy grasslands and forests, 50–2,000 m alt. Flowering: at different times of the year.
Vernacular : Chat phra in (ฉัตรพระอินทร์)(Loei); ueang phrao (เอื้องพร้าว)(Northern).
Notes: Most of the above authors have placed Phaius wallichii Lindl. in the synonymy of this species, but it was recently shown that this taxon is distinct (see below).
