Description : Tuber beige, 7–20 mm in diameter, 2- to 7-noded. Leaf lamina held above ground level, purple-bronze when new, turning green, cordate-polygonal, 2.7–5.2 by 3–6 cm, membranous, glabrous, 7- or 9-veined, base deeply cordate with basal lobes sometimes overlapping, apex acute or obtuse; petiole-like stalk erect, 4–8 cm long, 1.6–3 mm in diameter. Inflorescence 8.1–14.5 cm long, 1-flowered; peduncle 1.8–2 mm in diameter, bearing 3 or 4 tubular sheaths; floral bract oblong-ovate, 4.6–5.9 by 1.7–2.2 mm, apex acute. Flower nodding, opening widely; pedicel and ovary 5.2–8.3 mm long. Sepals and petals brown or red-purple with maroon flecks outside, ochre inside, oblong-elliptic or elliptic-obovate, apex acute; sepals 18–24.5 by 4.6–5.2 mm; petals 18.7–25 by 4.1–4.7 mm. Labellum lilac-purple sometimes with sparse white mottling, white along the central ridge, spathulate, 20.7–25 by 8.8–12.3 mm, 3-lobed below the middle, saccate at the base; lateral lobes rolled upwards and embracing the column, triangular-ovate, 1.6–2.1 mm long, apices acute; mid-lobe orbicular, 11.6–12.5 by 11–12.3 mm, margin entire but slightly undulate, apex truncate-rounded or slightly emarginate; labellum ornamented by a central ridge that extends almost to the apex of the mid-lobe, the ridge pubescent below the lateral lobes, glabrous elsewhere. Column white flushed purple, clavate, straight, 9.5–11.5 mm long; anther ca 2 mm in diameter; pollinia ca 2 mm long; rostellum protruding; stigma shield-shaped, raised. Capsule not seen.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Tak (Umphang – type: Suddee et al. 4426, holotype -BKF).


Distribution : Endemic.


Ecology : Terrestrial growing in humus-rich pockets on limestone in dry deciduous dipterocarp forests, 800–900 m alt. Flowering: April, leaf present from May–September.


Vernacular : Wan phaen din yen umphang (ว่านแผ่นดินเย็นอุ้มผาง).


Notes: Given the type locality’s close proximity to the border with Myanmar, it is likely that this species occurs also in that country.
