Description : Terrestrial holomycotroph, without leaves or pseudobulbs. Roots often absent, occasionally produced towards the apex of the rhizome. Rhizome 3–8 mm in diameter, soft, fleshy, tuberculate, with nodes 2–15 mm apart, usually branching, whitish, subterranean. Inflorescence 7–32 cm long, erect, with 3–6 flowers, usually produced terminally on the rhizome or on its side branches; peduncle covered with 4–8, mostly overlapping cataphylls, of which 1–4 are above ground; cataphylls 13–27 mm long, ovate, cymbiform, with a cylindrical sheathing base and a loosely sheathing, spreading, cymbiform apex; bracts 2–17 mm long. Flowers 3–4 cm across; sepals and petals cream to pale yellow or brownish pink with a diffuse, central, purple-red stripe to near the apex; labellum white with red spots on the mid-lobe and purple-red stripes on the side lobes, which become confluent at the margin; ridges white, sometimes stained pink. Dorsal sepal 19–26 by 4–6 mm, narrowly obovate to ligulate, acute, erect; lateral sepals similar, spreading. Petals 14–20 by 5–7 mm, narrowly elliptic, oblique, acute, usually porrect and covering the column. Labellum 12–17 by 9–11 mm when flattened, almost rhombic in outline, subentire to 3-lobed, papillose; side lobes erect, obtuse to subacute at the apex; mid-lobe 5–7 by 4–6 mm, triangular to ligulate, acute to obtuse, recurved, the margin usually undulating; ornaments of 2 ridges, convergent towards the apex, forming a short tube at the base of the mid-lobe. Column 9–13 mm long; pollinia 4. Capsule 3–5 by 0.9–1.2 cm, fusiform to ellipsoid, erect.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai, Tak.
Distribution : Pakistan, N & NE India (type), Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, SW China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Ryukyus; 1,100–1,600 m alt.
Ecology : In open forests in humus-filled rock fissures. Flowering: May and June.
Vernacular : Karekaron din (กะเรกะร่อนดิน)(Northern).
