Description : Lithophytic or epiphytic herb. Pseudobulbs represented by a swelling of the base of the shoot, ca 3 by 2 cm; new growths bilaterally flattened, ca 2–3 cm broad, composed of folded, flattened and keeled, distichous, purple cataphylls, from which the 2–4 true leaves emerge. Leaves suberect, 20–49 cm long including the channelled petiole; lamina 17–30 by 3.5–6.2 cm, elliptic, coriaceous, smooth, with a prominent mid-vein, obtuse to subacute, oblique, mucronate, margin entire. Inflorescence 24–44 cm long, pendulous, with about 15–35 closely spaced flowers; bracts 2–5 mm long. Flowers 2.5–3.5 cm across, usually orientated towards one side; not scented; sepals and petals pale yellow to dull green, lightly to heavily mottled with purple brown; labellum purple, the side lobes and the disk cream with maroon mottling, the mid-lobe maroon with 2 deep purple spots at the base. Dorsal sepal 20–29 by 7–10 mm, elliptic, obtuse, erect, with recurved margins; lateral sepals similar, oblique, spreading, pendulous. Petals 16–22 by 6–10 mm, subrhombic, subacute to acute, oblique, spreading. Labellum broad, 14–16(–20) by 10–15 mm, rhombic, papillose, attached to the column foot; side lobes obscure; mid-lobe ca 8 by 8 mm, triangular-ovate, decurved to weakly recurved, obtuse to mucronate; ornaments reduced to 2 swellings at the base of the mid-lobe. Column 11–14 mm long, with a short foot; pollinia 2. Capsule 3.5 by 2 cm, oblong-ellipsoidal.

Distribution : Nepal, NE India (Sikkim, Meghalaya), Bhutan, S China (Yunnan) and possibly Laos and Vietnam; 1,200–1,450 m alt. Iconotype in Paxton, Paxton’s Mag. Bot. 10: 97–98. 1843.
Ecology : Epiphyte on mossy rocks and mossy trees where humus and leaf litter have accumulated in evergreen montane forests, in dappled shade. Flowering: March and April.
Vernacular : Karekaron phu luang (กะเรกะร่อนภูหลวง)(Loei).
