Description : Stems climbing 5–10 m long, cylindric, smooth to furfuraceous, 7–10 mm in diameter, long-branched; nodes with scales; scales opposite the aerial roots, ovate, 1–2.5 by 1–1.5 cm, acute, coriaceous, glabrous to furfuraceous at base, glabrous towards apex. Inflorescence a large panicle, lateral or terminal, pubescent, few-to many-flowered; rachis pubescent with yellowish brown hairs; bracts ovate, 2–7 by 2–6 mm, pubescent with reddish-brown hairs. Flowers yellow; pedicel slender. Sepals hairy with reddish-brown hairs outside, 7- to 9-veined, apex acute; dorsal sepal lanceolate-elliptic, 7–14 by 4–8 mm; lateral sepals obliquely oblong-elliptic, 10–16 by 6–8 mm, larger than dorsal sepal, apex slightly hooded. Petals glabrous, elliptic-oblong, 8–15 by 4–7 mm, 4- to 7-veined, apex acute, not hooded. Labellum suborbicular, strongly concave, margin fringed, 10–16 mm long along the mid-line, 8–18 mm wide when spread out, inner surface with several longitudinal reddish-orange rows of small papillae, with a backward pointing callus near base. Column strongly curved forward, 4–6 mm long, with a muricate callus on each side at base; anther ca 1.5 mm long, glabrous. Ovary (including pedicel) 1–1.5 cm long, pubescent. Capsule banana-shaped, 25–30 by 3–3.5 cm. Seeds with wing ovate-lanceolate in outline, much longer than broad, margin irregularly serrate-erose.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Tak; SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan; SOUTH-EASTERN: Chanthaburi; PENINSULAR: Chumphon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Phuket, Songkhla, Ranong, Satun, Trang.
Distribution : Myanmar, S China, Vietnam (type) through Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra and Java to the Philippines.
Ecology : In tropical evergreen forests, hill evergreen forests and mixed deciduous forests with much bamboo undergrowth, often on dead trees; 50–1,100 m alt. Flowering: recorded in January, February, March, April, July, October, December, but especially April–July.
Vernacular : Thao daeng dong (เถาแดงดง); thao wan khiao dong (เถาวัลย์)(Southeastern).
Notes: Contrary to Fig. 33b, the labellum of this species is conspicuously hairy (with small papillae) on the inner surface and glabrous on the outer surface, see Plate II: 3.
