Description : Tree, 25 m high; bark greyish-yellow, smooth, fissured. Leaves elliptic to lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate or oblong, 16–42 by 5.5–10.5 cm, apex obtuse or abruptly acuminate, base obtuse, rarely cuneate, coriaceous, surfaces dull, lateral nerves 18–30 per side, yellowish, straight, distinct on both surfaces; petioles 3.5–6.5 cm, stout, thickened from middle to base. Panicles terminal, lax, ca 30 cm long, puberulous; bracts triangular, 1–4 by 1–1.5 mm, puberulous. Flowers white or yellowish, becoming deep pink, fragrant; pedicels 4–6 mm, slender; calyx lobes oblong-ovate, 2 by 1 mm, veined, glabrous; petals 5, elliptic, with 3–5 short basal ridges, glabrous; stamens 5, 1 fertile, filament 2 mm long; disc 5-lobed; ovary subglobose, style sublateral, 2 mm long. Drupes obliquely ovoid, ellipsoid or oblong, 7.5–12.5 cm long, fragrant, green to yellowish-green with brown dots; flesh light yellow, sweet. Seeds much compressed, covered with rather thick fibre.

Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia (Malacca – type), Borneo, Sumatra, Java.


Ecology : Sporadic in evergreen forests, 400–1,000 m alt. Commonly cultivated.


Vernacular : Mamuang chingrit (มะม่วงจิ้งหรีด), mamuang pa (มะม่วงป่า)(Central); kinning (กินนิง)(Narathiwat).
