Description : Tree, 5–20 m high; young branches densely white tomentose, short pubescent or glabrous when old. Leaves obovate or elliptic-oblong, 12–36 by 5–12 cm, apex acute or rounded, base obtuse or cuneate, coriaceous or subcoriaceous, pubescent to glabrous, lateral nerves 15–28 per side, raised below, venation scalariform, more conspicuous on the lower surface; petioles 1.5–3 cm long, flattened. Panicles up to 35 cm long, densely tawny pubescent. Flower pinkish; buds oblong or ovate, ca 5 by 2.5 mm, pubescent or puberulous, tuft of hairs at the apex; pedicels 1 cm; calyx calyptriform, 7 by 3 mm, pubescent inside, tomentose outside; petals oblong, 6–7 by 1–2 mm, acute or obtuse, densely villous outside, pubescent inside, sometimes only in the middle, sometimes ciliate; disc glabrous; stamens ca 30; filaments 1 cm long, inserted around the disc; ovary with a short stipe, stipe pilose at base or all over, styles 1.5 mm, stigma villous. Drupes subglobose, ca 1–3 cm in diam., enlarged wing-like petals elliptic or oblong, 6–10 by ca 2 cm, apex obtuse or rounded, veined; stalks 1.5–2 cm long.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai (Omkoi, Li, Mae Klang), Mae Hong Son (Mae Sariang); SOUTH-EASTERN: Chanthaburi; NORTH-EASTERN: Mukdahan.
Distribution : India, Myanmar (type), Laos.
Ecology : Scattered in deciduous forests, evergreen forests, open grass land, 300–1,000 m alt.
Vernacular : Su (ซู)(Karen-Mae Hong Son); su (ซู้)(Karen-Kanchanaburi); ma-riae (มะเรียะ)(Khmer); rak (รัก), rak yai (รักใหญ่)(Central); hak luang (ฮักหลวง)(Northern).
Uses: The poisonous black latex is the souce of lacquer.
