Description : Climber or creeper to 4 m long; annual or biennial; subglabrous or whitish or yellowish brown hairy to various degrees; foetid; stem terete. Stipules subreniform, 0.5–1 cm, deeply cleft into filiform, gland-tipped processes. Leaves: petiole 1–6 cm long; blade usually membranous, entire, or usually 3(–5)-lobed up to halfway, suborbicular to ovate in outline, 3–10 by 3–10 cm, 3–5-subplinerved, base cordate, lobes up to 4 cm long, usually acute-acuminate, margin (sub)entire with coarser gland-tipped hairs; glands absent, except the stronger hairs or processes on petiole, stipules, bracts, etc gland-tipped. Inflorescences sessile, 1(–2)-flowered, the straight peduncle inserted beside a simple tendril 5–15 cm long; bracts and bracteoles(1–)2–4 cm long, deeply 2–4 times pinnatisect, with filiform, gland-tipped segments, forming an involucre just below, and enveloping the flower. Flowers: pedicel 20–60 mm long; corolla 3–5 cm diam., pale pinkish or lilac, and white; hypanthium short saucer-shaped; sepals ovate-oblong to lanceolate, 1.5–2 cm long, 2–4 mm awned dorsally just below the apex; petals oblong to lanceolate, slightly shorter than the sepals; corona consisting of 2 outer series of threads, ca 1 cm long, several inner series of capillary threads 1–2 mm long; operculum membranous, more or less erect, denticulate; disc conspicuous, annular; androgynophore 4–6 mm long; filaments flattened, 5–6 mm long; anthers 3–5 mm long; ovary globose or ellipsoid, 2–3.5 mm long, usually glabrous; styles 4–5 mm long. Fruit a rather dry berry, (sub)globose, 1.5–3 cm diam, usually glabrous, ripening yellowish to orange, largely enveloped by persistent involucre. Seeds 4–5 mm long, obscurely 3-dentate at apex.
Thailand : Ubiquitous.
Distribution : An alien from America, now common throughout the subtropics and tropics areas.
Ecology : On coastal sands, in waste places, disturbed vegetation, and along roadsides, from sea level to 2,500 m alt.
