Description : Climber to 20 m long, subglabrous; branches 2–6 mm thick; internodes 2–10 cm long. Stipules minute. Leaves: petiole 2–8 cm long, with 2 glands at blade base in two hollowed auricles shortly adnate with the blade and somewhat peltately connate over the apex of the petiole; blade thinly coriaceous, dull greenish brown, entire or rarely (2–)3-lobed, subcircular or ovate, 3–15(–20) by 2–12(–18) cm, base cordate, apex obtuse or acute(-acuminate), 3–5(–7) plinerved, venation reticulate, distinct; lobes to 9 cm long. Inflorescences pedunculate for 1–14 cm, sometimes in the axils of reduced leaves in short shoots 2–10 cm long, 5–15-flowered in male, 1–3-flowered in female; tendrils 0–3. Sterile tendrils simple or 3-branched, 10–18 cm long. Bracts and bracteoles minute. Flowers somewhat fleshy, sometimes monoecious with male and female flowers mixed in one inflorescence. Male flowers: pedicel 3–12 mm long; flower tubiform-urceolate, including the 3–8 mm long stipe (10–)13–19 by 2.5–5(–7) mm, calyx lobes in anthesis reflexed; hypanthium including calyx tube 6–10 mm long; calyx lobes (long-)triangular, subacute, 2–3.5 mm long; petals narrowly triangular to lanceolate, 4–5 by 1.5 mm, subacute, 1–3 nerved, subentire, decurrent, inserted 2–3 mm below the throat of the calyx tube; filaments 3–4 mm long, free or connate for 1–1.5 mm, inserted at the base of the hypanthium or on short androgynophore, anthers 2.5–4 by 0.8 mm, somewhat tapering towards the apex, subobtuse or to 0.2 mm acuminate-apiculate; septa 1–2 mm high; corona absent; disc glands ca 2 mm long. Female flowers: pedicel 3–10(–20) mm long; flower tubular, including the 2–4 mm long stipe 10–14 by 3–5 mm; gynophore 3–4 mm long; ovary subglobose or ellipsoid, thick walled, ca 4 by 3.5 mm; styles ca 1 mm long, partly connate, stigmas subglobose, papillate, each ca 1.5 mm diam. Fruits 1 or 2 per infructescence, subglobose, or ellipsoid, or somewhat pear-shaped, apex rounded, excluding the 1–4 cm long gynophore 4–7.5 by 3.5–5 cm; pericarp coriaceous, sometimes somewhat spongy inside, 5–8 mm thick. Seeds obliquely ellipsoid in outline, 7–8 by 6–7 by 3 mm.

Distribution : Laos, Cambodia, S Vietnam.


Ecology : Deciduous dipterocarp forests, dry scrub, bamboo jungle, rocky places; at 0–400 m alt.
