Description : Tree, 4–25 m high, 60–160 cm girth. Twigs reddish-brown hairy, then glabrescent. Bark greyish; inner bark reddish-brown or brown, 1–4 cm thick. Stipules linear, 4–6 by 0.2 mm, densely tomentose. Leaves obovate, oblong or elliptic, 5–18 by 2–6 cm, usually whorled at ends of twigs; base cuneate; apex acute or obtuse, shortly mucronate, rarely acuminate; margins serrate in the upper half or entire; coriaceous or subcoriaceous, densely tomentose then glabrescent on the upper surface; glaucous on the lower; midrib and nerves prominent and sparsely pubescent on the lower surface; subdepressed on the upper; lateral nerves 8–12 pairs, curved but not anastomosing, scalariform veins hardly distinct. Petiole 1.5–2.5 cm, tomentose then glabrescent. Male inflorescence a catkin, simple or in a tuft of 2–3, pendulous, axillary to leaves or upper leaf scars, or terminal, 1–7 cm long, tomentose; bracts and bracteoles narrowly lanceolate, ca 2 by 0.5 mm, pubescent outside. Male flowers free. Perianth 6–8) lobed, campanulate, lobes obovate, ca 2 by 1 mm, divided to or near the base, but linked by cilia; stamens 8, ca 1 mm long, glabrous. Female inflorescence spike erect, axillary, 1–2.5 cm long, tomentose. Female flowers simple, other characters as in male flowers, styles (4)–5 divergent, pubescent; stigmata capitate, decurved. Acorns ovoid, 2.5–3 by 2.5–4 cm (including cupule), fruit-stalk ca 0.5 cm long, on erect infructescence 2–3 cm long, each infructescence usually with one acorn. Cupule cup or dish-shaped, enclosing half of the nut (ca ⅔ when young), rim always dilated when mature; wall comprising silky scales, set in 8–12 rings or lamellae. Nut 1, ovoid, 2–3 by 1.8–3 cm, indumentum rusty then glabrous except around the umbo.

Distribution : Burma (type).


Ecology : Lower montane rain forests, lower montane pine-oak forests, deciduous dipterocarp forests, savanna forests, often near streams on granite bedrock.


Vernacular : Ko talap (ก่อตลับ)(Northern); ko aep (ก่อแอบ), ko um (ก่ออุ้ม), ko daeng (ก่อแดง), ko khi mu (ก่อขี้หมู)(Northeastern); ko ta lap (ก่อตลับ)(Central).
