Description : Tree to ca 50 m. Pitted nodal glands 0.3 x 0.6 mm usually present. Axillary bud scales with a ciliate margin but otherwise glabrous, 1.0–2.0 mm long, not stalked, all buds within the axil. Leaves ovate to elliptic; apex rounded to shortly (tip to 0.5 cm long) acuminate; base cuneate to attenuate; 5–19 by 2–7.5 cm, length to width ratio 2.0–3.3; margin slightly undulate; underside smooth, with 0–8 glands, 0.4–0.5 mm, without a basal pair; midrib prominent above and below, shallowly grooved above; secondary veins 5–9, not forming a distinct intramarginal vein except sometimes at apex; tertiary veins reticulate and obscure; petiole 6–11 mm. Inflorescence unbranched, sparsely minutely hairy, without nodal glands. Flowers white, drying blackish-red; pedicel ca 5 mm, outer sepals ca 4.0 mm, inner sepals ca 6.0 mm; upper petals ca 13 mm, glabrous or densely hairy at base and apex; lateral petals ca 15 mm, glabrous; keel ca 13 mm, glabrous. Stamens 8–9 mm; anthers 1.0 mm. Gynoecium 8.0 mm, stipe 1.0, ovules 8–18; ovary and style glabrous. Fruit globular, to 10 cm diameter, glabrous; seeds 8–16.

Distribution : Sumatra, Malay Peninsula (type), Borneo.
Ecology : Evergreen forests to 1,000 m alt.
Vernacular : Chum saeng khang (ชุมแสงค่าง)(Narathiwat); chum saeng luk yan (ชุมแสงลูกยาน), chunm saeng thong daeng (ชุมแสงทองแดง)(Peninsular); tue-lo (ตือถือ)(Malay-Narathiwat).
Notes: The single Thai collection differs from the type collection in having glabrous stamens (Meijden l.c.), but is otherwise similar. Since the hairiness of some Xanthophyllum flowers may be rather variable this is not considered to be a new taxon.
