Description : Short-lived perennial. Culms densely tufted, 3–35 cm by 0.2–0.6 mm, trigonous, smooth. Leaves reduced to basal sheaths; sheaths cylindric, 1.5–5 cm long, pale green to light brown; ligule 0. Involucral bract 1, glume-like. Inflorescence a single terminal spikelet. Spikelet ovoid to ovoid-conical, terete, (4–)6–13 by 2–3 mm. Glumes 5–15 per spikelet, 2.7–4 by 1.5–2 mm, subacute, sides thinly chartaceous to membranous, pale greenish, yellow brown or reddish brown, margins pale-hyaline, keel obtuse. Stamens 2; anthers 0.8–1 mm long. Stigmas 2. Nutlets obovate to orbicular, biconvex, 1–1.3 by 1–1.3 mm, whitish to cream, coarsely transversely wrinkled, very finely striate.


Thailand : NORTH-EASTERN: Sakon Nakhon (Ban Nong Hian), Kalasin, Khon Kaen; SOUTH-EASTERN: Chon Buri, Chanthaburi (Khao Soi Dao, Makham), Trat (Huai Raeng); PENINSULAR: Chumphon (Bang Son, Langsuan), Ranong (Khlong Naka, Muang Len), Surat Thani (Chaiya), Phangnga (Khao Pata Luang Keow), Phuket, Nakhon Si Thammarat (Khao Luang), Trang (Muang), Narathiwat (Paa Waai, Su-ngai Padi).


Distribution : India and Sri Lanka, through Malesia (Malay Peninsula – type) to N Australia, north-eastwards to S China and the Ryukyus.


Ecology : Open, wet or muddy places at low altitudes.


Vernacular : Ya nuat pla duk (หญ้าหนวดปลาดุก)(Southwestern); phrong klom noi (พรงกลมน้อย), ya plueak krathiam sai (หญ้าเปลือกกระเทียมทราย)(Peninsular).


Notes: This species also has a single spikelet and a transversely wrinkled nutlet, but the spikelet is erect.
