Description : Large tree, 20–30 m high, up to 300 cm in girth or more; bark dark grey or brownish-grey, rough, cracking and flaking longitudinally; young shoots darkish-purple; young branches quadrangular. Leaves elliptic, ovate, or ovate-oblong, 6–22 by 4–12 cm; apex acuminate; base cuneate or obtuse; glabrous and glossy green above, puberulous or glabrous, light green below; mostly chartaceous; petiole 4–9 mm long. Inflorescences 7–30 cm long with a few to several paigs of racemes along the main and secondary axes; racemes 7–20 cm long, 5–7 mm wide, yellowish-white or greenish-yellow; bracts and bracteoles narrowly triangular to linear; pedicels 1–3 mm long. Calyx-tube 2–3 mm wide, finely tawny puberulous outside, densely whitish-tomentose inside especially in male flowers; calyx-lobes 5, 0.5–1.5 mm long. Capsules numerous, globose to ovoid, 2–4 mm long, slightly laterally compressed, finely puberulous, 2-valved, faintly longitudinally grooved at the middle of each valve.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phrae; CENTRAL: Nakhon Nayok; EASTERN: Ubon Ratchathani; NORTH-EASTERN: Nong Khai, Sakon Nakhon; SOUTH-EASTERN: Chanthaburi, Trat; SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan; PENINSULAR: Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, Trang, Satun, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Narathiwat.
Distribution : E India (Assam), Bangladesh, Andaman Islands, Burma, Indochina, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java (type), Lesser Sunda Islands, Borneo, the Philippines.
Ecology : Locally common in secondary tropical evergreen rain forests and dry evergreen forests from sea level to ca 1,000 m alt., sporadic in moister areas of mixed deciduous forests. Flowering: profusely during November–January when new sets of leaves appear. Flowers have a strong, disagreeable smell.
Vernacular : Khi mot (ขี้มด), khap (คับ), mueat so (เหมือดเซาะ)(Northern); ka am (กะอาม)(Northeastern); sida pa (สีดาป่า)(Eastern); khi non (ขี้หนอน), krathong loi (กระทงลอย)(Southeastern); ka som (กาซ้อม), krom (กร๊อม), som (ซอม, สอม)(Peninsular); mu-ku-wae (มุกูแว), pi-kui (ปีกุย)(Malay-Peninsular).
Notes: Crypteronia paniculata Blume var. affinis (Planch.) Beus.-Osinga is treated here as a synonym of C. paniculata Bume. The distinctions between these two taxa based on the degree of hairiness of leaves and receptacle, as well as the capsule shape are not clear-cut due to ecological variation. This is particularly true in populations from mainland SE Asia.
