Description : Evergreen tree, up to 20 m high, twigs unarmed. Leaves (ovate-)lanceolate, 10–12 by 2–2.5 cm, base acute, or obtuse, apex cuspidate, chartaceous, glabrous on both surfaces; lateral veins 8–12 pairs, curved and anastomosing well away from the margin, prominent on both surfaces; reticulation prominent on upper surface, inconspicuous on lower surface; petiole 5–10 mm long, glabrous. Male flowers cymose, 4(–5)-merous sessile or subsessile. Calyx campanulate, 4–5 mm long, divided to half way, pilose outside, glabrous inside. Corolla urceolate, 5–7 mm long, divided to middle, glabrous on both sides. Stamens 12–30, (sub) sessile, glabrous. Rudimentary ovary pilose. Female flowers solitary, 4(–5)-merous; pedicel 1–2 mm long, velutinous. Calyx companulate, divided ± to a quarter; velutinous on both sides. Corolla as in male flowers but larger. Ovary globose, sericeous, 4(–5)-locular; style single, sericeous. Staminodes unknown. Fruit globose, ± 1.5–2 by 1.5–2 cm, pericarp crustaceous, glabrous, pubescent only at apex; fruiting calyx flattened, divided ± to middle, tomentose later glabrescent outside, pubescent inside; lobes slightly reflexed, undulate and plicate, with inconspicuous nerves; fruit-stalk 2–5 mm long; endosperm smooth.

Distribution : Malay Peninsula, Borneo (type).
Ecology : In lowland tropical rain forests, 300–500 m alt. Flowering: February–May; fruiting: March–September.
Vernacular : Mai dam (ไม้ดำ)(Satun).
