Description : Woody climber. Leaves ovate to oblong-ovate, very variable in size, up to 20 by 12 cm, coriaceous or subcoriaceous, blackish when dry; apex acuminate, base rounded, obtuse or acute; secondary nerves curved; petiole 1–1.5 cm. Inflorescences cauline or terminal, much-branched; male spikes mostly 3 by 0.4 cm. ♂ flowers about 20 in each collar. Rudimentary ovaries ovoid. ♀ flowers 5–7 in each collar. Fruits ellipsoid, 1.5 by 1 cm, red when mature, stalk stout, 0.2 cm long.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Kamphaeng Phet; NORTH-EASTERN: Phetchabun, Loei; EASTERN: Si Sa Ket; SOUTH-EASTERN: Trat, Chanthaburi; SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi; PENINSULAR: Ranong.


Distribution : Indochina (Burma – type).


Ecology : From low altitudes up to montane forests, 50–1,800 m alt. Flowering: February–April; fruiting: March–June.


Vernacular : Muai (เมื่อย), haen muai (แฮนม่วย), muai (ม่วย), mamuai (มะม่วย).
