Description : Tree, 5–15 m tall. Leaves lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 7–15 by2.5–5 cm; apex acute, rarely rounded or obtuse; base cuneate; petiole 2–3 cm long. Bracteoles 2, subtending the calyx. Calyx lobes ovate or rounded, 1–1.5 cm long, unequal. Petals ovate, 1.5–2 cm long, acute at the apex, constricted below the middle, shortly connate at the base into a tube. Stamens 1.2–1.5 cm long. Fruit globular or ovoid, 2 cm across.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai (Ban Kae), Lamphun; NORTH-EASTERN: Loei (Phu Luang), Phetchabun, Sakon Nakhon; EASTERN: Surin; SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi (Sangkhla).
Distribution : Burma (type), Indochina, S China (Yunnan, Kwangtung), Hainan, Formosa, Malay Peninsula. Five varieties are recognized by Kobuski (J. Arnold Arbor. 33: 79. 1952)
Ecology : Scattered or in small groups in open grassy forests, deciduous forests, or evergreen forests, at the summit or on ridges of hills, from low to medium altitudes (850–1,700 m).
Vernacular : Saraphi (สารภี), hak (ฮัก)(Northern); ban ma (บานมา), tham sung (ทำซุง), kaem on (แก้มอ้น), phra ram (พระราม), tong nang (ตองหนัง), tin cham (ตีนจำ), mong nang (โมงนั่ง), kham so (คำโซ่)(Northeastern).
