Description : Large liana, sometimes shrub with drooping branches. Leaves up to 51-foliolate the rachis pubescent; leaflets subsessile, ovate or elliptic to oblong, 1–3 by 0.5–1.5 cm, glabrous, or fulvous-pilose beneath (forma villosa); base slightly cordate, or truncate, ± oblique; apex emarginate (forma mimosoides), rounded (forma obtusifolia), or slightly and bluntly acuminate (forma villosa); nerves 2–10 pairs, inconspicuous. Inflorescences racemose, or paniculate, in axillary fascicles of 1–3 axes unequal in length up to 12 cm, fulvous-tomentose. Sepals 1.5–2 mm hairy. Petals 3–5 mm long. Carpels variously hairy. Fruits ± curved, 1.5 by 0.5 cm, dehiscing by a ventral slit.
Thailand : SOUTH-EASTERN: Prachin Buri; SOUTH-WESTERN: Ratchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan; PENINSULAR: Chumphon, Ranong, Surat Thani, Phuket.
Distribution : Andaman and Nicobar Islands (type), Lower Burma, Cambodia, S Vietnam, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, W Java, Borneo.
Ecology : In evergreen forests along edges or streams, in scrubs, 0–800 m alt. Flowering and fruiting: chiefly during dry season from November–February.
Vernacular : Ngon kai (หงอนไก่)(Southwestern); ngon kai lek (หงอนไก่เล็ก), thao ngon kai (เถาหงอนไก่), wan kham (วันขาม)(Peninsular).
Notes: Note.— Three forms can be distinguished:
— forma mimosoides. Leaflets glabrous, emarginate at the apex.
— forma obtusifolia Leenh. In Fl. Mal. I. 5: 519. 1958. —Rourea similis Blume —Santaloides simile O.Ktze. Leaflets glabrous, rounded at apex (not emarginate).
— forma villosa (Planch.) Vidal. —Rourea villosa Planch. —Santaloides villosum O.Ktze. —R. phyllanthoides Blume — S. phyllanthoides O.Ktze. Leaflets fulvous-pilose beneath, ± acuminate, blunt at apex.
