Description : Perennial herb; stems twining, glabrous, glabrescent to sparsely pubescent. Stipules ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 3–4 by 1.5–2 mm, apex acute, base truncate, margin entire, outside glabrescent to sparsely pubescent, inside glabrous. Leaves: petioles 3.5–12.5 cm long, sparsely pubescent to glabrescent, with pulvinus, deeply striate when dry; rachis 1–2 cm long, sparsely pubescent to glabrescent. Leaflets ovate, ovate-lanceolate, lanceolate, elliptic or rhomboid, 5–11 by 3–6.5 cm, apex acute or acuminate and apiculate, base obtuse or rounded, margin entire, both surfaces glabrous to sparsely pubescent; lateral veins 5–7 pairs; stipels oblong or ovate, 2–2.5 by 0.5–1 mm, apex acute, glabrous; petiolules 3–4.5 mm long, densely pubescent. Inflorescence axillary, 3–8-fascicled, arranged in nodose-pseudoracemes; peduncles 8–22 cm long, glabrous to glabrescent; axis 1–3 cm long, pubescent; bracts ovate, 3.5–4.5 by ca 2 mm, striate, apex acute, base truncate, sparsely pubescent along margin. Flowers 2 in each fascicle, pink or purple, pale yellow with age; pedicels 1.5–2.5 mm long, pubescent; bracteoles 2, appressed to base of calyx tube, caducous, ovate, 2.5–3 by 1.5–2 mm, apex acute, sparsely pubescent along margin. Calyx: tube 3.5–4.5 by 5–6 mm; upper lobes connate, apex slightly divided to shallow lobes, 0.5–1 mm long; lower lobes lanceolate, 3–4 by 1–1.5 mm, apex acute or acuminate, both sides sparsely pubescent. Corolla: standard pink or purple, suborbicular, 2–2.5 by 1.8–2.2 cm, apex emarginate, base with 2 small auricles, 0.5–1 mm long, claw white, ca 3 mm long; wings pink or purple, obovate, 2.4–2.8 by 1.1–1.3 cm, apex rounded, near base with 1 small appendage, claw white, 5–6 mm long; keel white, spirally incurved for about 3 turns, 4–5 by 0.7–1 cm, near base with 1 small appendage, claw white, ca 1 cm long. Stamens: filaments white, 5–6 cm long; anthers yellow, oblong, ca 1.5 mm long. Pistil 5–6 cm long; ovary linear, sparsely pubescent; stigma hairy. Pods compressed, linear or oblong, 9–12 by 0.7–1 cm, glabrous to sparsely pubescent, with short apical beak, sutures covered with minute antrorse barbs; base stipitate, 1–1.5 mm long; fruit stalk 2–5 mm long, glabrous. Seeds 10–14, dry seeds greenish brown or dark reddish brown, reniform, sometimes ellipsoid or subglobose, 5–6 by 4–5 mm; aril developed.

Distribution : Throughout the tropics (Guyana – type).


Ecology : Open areas, along roadsides, disturbed areas, near paddy fields, along rivers or canals, sometimes cultivated, 0–300 m alt. Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.


Vernacular : Thua fai (ถั่วไฟ)(Chiang Mai); thua nok (ถั่วนก)(Bangkok); thua phi (ถั่วผี)(Central).
