Description : Vine or herb, stems twining, 2–5 m long, glabrescent to sparsely pubescent. Stipules subtriangular, 3–4.5 by 1.5–2 mm, apex acute, base truncate, outside and along margin sparsely pubescent, inside glabrous. Leaves: petioles 5–12 cm long, sparsely pubescent; pulvinus 4–8 cm long; rachis 1.5–3 cm long, sparsely pubescent. Leaflets deltoid, rhomboid or ovate, 3–11 by 2–8.5 cm; lateral leaflets oblique and slightly smaller than terminal leaflet, apex acuminate, base obtuse, rounded, truncate or cuneate, margin entire, both surfaces sparsely pubescent; lateral veins 4–6 pairs; stipels lanceolate or oblong, 2.5–4 by 0.5–1 mm, apex acute or acuminate, base truncate, outside and along margin sparsely pubescent, inside glabrous; petiolules 3.5–5 mm long, densely pubescent. Inflorescences: 7–20-fascicled, nodose-pseudoracemes; peduncles 4.5–25.5 cm long, sparsely pubescent; axis 4–15 cm long, glabrous, glabrescent or sparsely pubescent. Flowers 3–5 in each fascicle; pedicels 2–4 mm long, glabrous or glabrescent; bracteoles 2, appressed to base of calyx tube, oblanceolate, obovate or elliptic, 4–6 by 1.5–3 mm, apex rounded, base obtuse or rounded, pubescent along margin. Calyx: tube 3.5–5 by 5.5–7 mm; two upper lobes connate, apex slightly divided to shallow lobes; the lowest of three lower lobes subtriangular, 3–3.5 by 1.5–2 mm, apex acute; two lateral lobes subtriangular, 2.5–3 by 1.5–2 mm, apex acute, outside and along margin pubescent, inside glabrous. Corolla: standard purple, purplish pink or white, reniform or suborbicular, 1.2–1.8 by 1.5–2 cm, apex emarginate, claw ca 2.5 mm long; wings purple, purplish pink or white, broadly elliptic or obovate, 1.6–2 by 1–1.2 cm, apex rounded, near base with a small appendage, ca 1.5 mm long, claw 6–8 mm long; keel whitish pink or white, falcate, 1.6–2.2 by ca 0.4 cm, connate along outer margins at the middle to the apex, pouched near the base outside, ca 2 by 1 mm, claw ca 5 mm long. Stamens: filaments white, 1.6–2.2 cm long; anthers yellow, elliptic, 1–1.2 by 0.5–0.7 mm. Ovary light green, 1.8–2.2 cm long; linear, pubescent, base shortly stipitate; style flattened and geniculate, hairy near apex. Pods oblong-falcate or oblong, 3.5–13 by 1–3 cm, verrucose along margin, apical beak 0.5–1 cm long, base stipitate, 2–3 mm long, sparsely pubescent; fruit stalk 4–6 mm long, glabrous. Seeds 2–6, dark brown or black, oblong, 0.6–1.6 by 0.4–0.9 cm, slightly compressed; hilum linear, with white aril, hemispherical.


Thailand : Cultivated throughout the country, mostly in the north.


Distribution : Native to Africa, Madagascar and Asia (Indian subcontinent); widely introduced elsewhere (cultivated in France – type).


Ecology : Cultivated and sometimes naturalized in open areas, roadsides or disturbed areas; 0–1,500 m alt.


Vernacular : No laep (เนาะแล้บ)(Chiang Mai); thao paep (เถาแปบ)(Mae Hong Son); ma paep pa (มะแปบป่า), thua pae yi (ถั่วแปะยี)(Northern); thua paep (ถั่วแปบ)(Central).


CommonName : Hyacinth bean, Lablab.


Uses: Young pods are eaten as vegetables.
