Description : Small shrub, 0.8–1.5 m tall; young parts pubescent; branchlets subterete, densely hairy. Stipules ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 2–4 by 1.5–3 mm, acute, densely hairy. Leaves 3-foliolate; petioles 2–4 mm long, densely hairy; rachis 4.5–6 mm long, densely hairy, angular. Leaflets: petiolules 1.5–2 mm long, densely hairy; blade obovate-oblong to oblong, elliptic, 3–5.5 by 1–2 cm, apex obtuse, slightly retuse, base cuneate, margin entire, upper surface glabrous, lower surface densely hairy; lateral veins 5–8 pairs; stipels linear or filiform, 1–2 mm long, densely hairy. Inflorescences axillary, 1–2-flowered, 1.5–5 cm long; peduncles 1–7 cm long, sparsely and shortly villous; bracts ovate, frequently unequal, 2–4 by ca 2 mm; bracteoles ovate-elliptic or obovate, 7–8 by 4–5 mm; pedicels 4–6 mm long. Flowers light purple or lilac, 4.5–5.5 cm long. Calyx campanulate; tube 11–15 mm long, pubescent; lobes ovate, much shorter than tube, 6–9 mm long, apex acuminate. Corolla: standard suborbicular, ca 4.5 by 4.5 cm, apex emarginate, pubescent, claw ca 5 mm long; wings oblique oblong rhomboid, 1.7–2.1 by 0.7–1 cm, claw ca 12 mm long, slightly exceeding the keel length; keel falcate, rostrate 1–1.1 by 0.4–0.5 cm, claw ca 2 cm long. Stamens diadelphous; filament 2.8–3.4 cm long; anthers, suborbicular, 1–1.5 mm long. Ovary oblong, costate, densely white pubescent; style 19–23 mm long, geniculate 6–8 mm below the apex, upper part fringed with 2 adaxial rows of hairs, cupped; stigma flat-capitate. Pods subterete, glabrous, 2.5–3 by 0.8 cm, ca 4 mm thick, turgid, with medial rib on each valve, beak ca 2 mm long, persistent. Seeds 5–7, suborbicular, ca 4 mm in diameter, ca 2 mm thick, dark brown or black.
Thailand : PENINSULAR: Narathiwat (Tak Bai).
Distribution : Native to S America and West Indies (Puerto Rico – type), cultivated elsewhere, Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia.
Ecology : Along the coast, meadows or grassland in sandy soil and reported this species can be found in very dry to wetter soil near sea level.
Vernacular : Anchan ton (อัญชันต้น)(Narathiwat); u-be-kue-ling (อูบีกือลิง) (Malay-Narathiwat).
