Description : Tree up to 12 m tall; young branches terete, pubescent, glabrescent. Stipules lanceolate, 8–10 by 2–3 mm, glabrous, deciduous. Leaves 3-foliolate; petioles 5–6.5(–8) cm long, pubescent; rachis 1.5–3.5 cm long, pubescent. Leaflets: petiolules 6–10 mm, pubescent; blade ovate to elliptic-ovate, 9–16 by 4–9 cm, apex acute to acuminate, base rounded, broadly cuneate, margin entire, upper surface green, glabrous, lower surface pale green, pubescent; lateral veins 13–17 pairs; stipels linear, 5–12 by 0.5–1.5 mm, pubescent, deciduous. Inflorescences axillary or terminal, many-flowered, racemose-paniculate, up to 45 cm long; peduncles short, ca 1 cm long, pubescent; bracts lanceolate or ovate, 6–8 by 3–4 mm, pubescent; bracteoles ovate or broadly lanceolate, 17–23 by 5–8 mm, persistent, pubescent, striate, subequal and enclosing calyx; pedicels 4–6 mm long. Flowers 4–6 cm long, fragrant. Calyx 2.5–3.2 cm long, campanulate; tube 14–17 mm long, pubescent; lobes ovate or ovate-deltoid, acute, 7–12 by 3–5 mm. Corolla purple to pinkish; standard obovate, 4.5 by 3.5 cm, apex rounded, base cuneate, claw ca 3 mm long, sparsely pubescent on outside; wings pale pink to white, oblong-falcate, 25–35 by 8–10 mm, claw 8–10 mm long; keel very pale pink to white, falcate, 30–33 by 5–7 mm, claw 15–20 mm long. Stamens diadelphous; filaments 25–30 mm long; anthers linear-oblong, 1–1.5 mm long. Ovary oblong, ca 15 mm long, pubescent; style ca 20 mm long, geniculate; stigma capitate, white pubescent at base. Pods oblong, stipitate, 10–25 by 2–3.5 cm, green turning brown, flat, glabrous; stipe 1–2 cm long. Seeds 5–10, orbicular, 1–1.5 cm in diameter, 1–2 mm thick, black, glabrous.

Distribution : Northern South America (Brazil – type), cultivated elsewhere.
Ecology : Cultivated as an ornamental plant, open areas, well-drained soils.
Vernacular : Anchan ton (อัญชันต้น); Sombreiro (Brazil).
