Description : Tree up to 20 m tall, bark smooth, grey to greyish black. Twigs glabrous with conspicuous lenticels. Leaves thinly coriaceous, brittle both fresh and dried, asymmetrically elliptic or oblong, 9.5‒15 by 2.5‒5 cm, base obtuse or cuneate, apex acute or acuminate with acumen 7–10 mm long, glabrous on both surfaces, midrib shallowly grooved above, secondary veins fairly straight, 10‒12 per side, tertiary venation percurrent; petioles 5‒10 mm long, grooved above. Inflorescences fascicled in axils of leafy twigs and on woody tubercles of leafless twigs, 3‒8-flowered, pedicels 2.5‒3 cm long, puberulent, each bearing an adnate ovate bract 3‒4 by 2‒3 mm between the base and the midpoint; buds cushion-shaped. Sepals valvate, free, chartaceous, broadly ovate, 5‒7 by 3‒4 mm, apex obtuse, puberulous outside and glabrous inside. Petals imbricate at the apices, spreading, yellow with red or dark red on both sides at base, thinly coriaceous, oblong, apex acute, glabrous on both sides; outer petals 23‒33 by 6‒8 mm; inner petals 25‒35 by 8‒11 mm. Stamens cuneate, 1.4‒1.6 mm long, anther connective apex truncate. Carpels numerous, 1.8‒2 mm long, stigmas higher than the anther connective apices, obovate, 0.8‒1 mm long, pubescent. Receptacle cushion-shaped, 3‒4 mm in diam., 2‒3 mm thick, pubescent. Fruit up to 38 monocarps borne on a pedicel 30‒55 mm long, 4‒5 mm thick. Monocarps orange to dark red when mature, oblongoid, 2.5‒3.5 by 1.4‒1.8 cm, glabrous, apex and base obtuse, stipe 25‒45 mm long, 2‒2.5 mm thick; pericarp ca 1.5 mm thick. Seeds oblong, 23‒32 by 12‒16 mm, brown, smooth, often shiny.
Thailand : PENINSULAR: Trang, Yala, Narathiwat.
Distribution : Peninsular Malaysia (type), Singapore, Indonesia.
Ecology : Tropical rain forests and peat swamp forests, 50‒100 m alt. Flowering: September–April; fruiting: March‒May.
Vernacular : Panan daeng (ปาหนันแดง), ka-nang-hu-tae (กะนางฮูแต), kluai (กล้วย), kluai mai (กล้วยไม้)(Narathiwat); pi-sae-ka-yu (ปีแซกายู)(Malay-Narathiwat).
Notes: Monoon sclerophyllum is distinguished from other Monoon species by the fleshy hard brittle leaf lamina.
