Description : Woody climber; young twigs lenticular, hairy. Stipules setaceous to lanceolate, 6–12 by ca 0.5 mm. Leaves: petioles 8–11 cm long, sparsely hairy; apex acuminate, persistent, margin ciliate, outside densely hairy, inside sparely hairy, woody and spine-like on old branches; rachis 10–18 cm long. Leaflets: petiolules 3–5 mm long, hairy; lamina broadly obovate, oblong to elliptic, terminal leaflet slightly larger than lateral ones, 5.5–13 by 2–7 cm, apex acute, base cuneate, margin entire, upper surface glabrous, lower surface tomentose, glabrescent; lateral veins 5–8 pairs; stipels filiform, 5–6 mm long, hairy. Inflorescences panicles or a combination of racemes aggregated terminally in leafy panicles, up to 30 cm long, terminal and axillary, silvery hairy; bracts 6–15 mm long, filiform to lanceolate, 7–11 by 1–1.5 mm, both sides densely hairy; bracteoles absent; pedicels 2–6 mm long, densely hairy. Calyx tube 2.5–3 mm long, minutely toothed to slightly truncate, greenish; upper connate, slightly separate at apex; lower ca 0.5 by 0.5–1 mm, apex acute, margin entire, outside densely hairy, inside hairy. Corolla white to pale violet: standard orbicular, 10–15 by (8–)12–15 mm, apex retuse, margin entire, both sides glabrous, claw ca 3 mm; wings oblong, 12–13 by 3–4.5 mm, base auriculate with auricles 2 mm long, apex rounded, margin with auricles, both sides glabrous, claw ca 3 mm; keel falcate, 10–11 by 4–5 mm, base auriculate with auricles ca 2 mm long, apex rounded, margin entire, both sides glabrous, claw ca 3 mm. Stamens: staminal tube 9–12 mm long, glabrous; free part 3–4 mm long; vexillary stamen 9–11 mm long; anthers oblong, ca 0.7 by 0.5 mm. Disc tubular, 2 mm long. Ovary 2–5-ovuled; stipe ca 3 mm long; style 4–5 mm long, glabrous. Pods 5–24 by 1–1.8 cm, black when dry. Seeds 10–12 by ca 6 mm.

Distribution : India (type), Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines.


Ecology : Deciduous, bamboo and evergreen forests, on limestone mountain, occasionally riverbank in evergreen forests, 100–700 m alt. Flowering: March–June; fruiting: July–September.


Vernacular : Khruea khao phu (เครือเขาผู้); du khruea (ดู่เครือ); talan khruea (ตาลานเครือ)(Northern); lai bok (ไหลบก)(Nan); chan (จั่น)(Sukhothai); mueak pla lai (เมือกปลาไหล)(Central).
