Description : Tree 10 m tall; young shoots, leaf-rachis, inflorescences and calyces tawny velvety. Stipules small, caducous. Leaves with petioles 2.5–4.5 cm long; rachis 15–18 cm long. Leaflets 7–9, oblong-lanceolate, 6–12 by 2.5–4.5 cm, apex acute, base cuneate or rounded, coriaceous, upper surface slightly hairy, lower surface buff velvety; lateral veins 5–8pairs; petiolules 3–5 mm long. Inflorescences axillary, racemose, 8–10 cm long; pedicels ca 10 mm long. Calyx ca 10 mm long; teeth ovate-lanceolate, longer than tube. Corolla yellow with purple stripes; standard suborbicular, ca 12 by 14 mm, emarginate, with 2 callus-like appendages on inner side at base; claw short, ca 3 mm long; wings and keel oblong, 12–12.5 by 5–6 mm, obtuse. Ovary hairy along margins; ovules 9–10. Pods oblong, 7–11 by 2–3 cm, strongly compressed, septate between seeds; valves thick, woody, dark brown, glabrous. Seeds ovate, ca 10 by 7.5 mm; testa hard, bright scarlet, not easily separable from the cotyledons.

Distribution : China (Hupeh – type), Vietnam.


Ecology : Hill evergreen forests, to 1,300 m alt.
