Description : Shrubs 1–3 m tall; branchlets terete, arching, young branches compressed, stems brown, smooth, slender, scars present. Leaves sessile-subsessile; lanceolate, oblanceolate, elliptic, oblong or obtuse, 3.3–6.3 by 1.3–2.4 cm, base cuneate, apex somewhat acute to acuminate, delicate, papyraceous, glabrous, few pellucid dots present, vibrant green to red to dull red/black, midrib depressed on both surfaces, adaxial midrib colour very variable, red, yellow/white or dark red, abaxial midrib colour red or brown, secondary, intersecondary and tertiary veins visible, no intramarginal veins. Inflorescence terminal, 1–5(–10)-flowered, from apical node; pedicels 0.3–1.6 cm long. Sepals oblong, elliptic to obovate-spathulate, 3.5–9 by 2–6.5 mm, rounded, entire, ± imbricate, green, red/brown, longitudinal veins present. Petals obovate, 9–18 by 5–12 mm, entire, bright yellow to golden yellow, longitudinal veins present, caducous. Stamens 60–80 per fascicle; anthers oblong, 4–6(–8) mm long, approximately 1/4–1/2 as long as petals, bright yellow to orange-yellow. Ovary 3–7 by 4–6 mm; styles 5, longer than anthers, ovoid to globose. Fruit green, ovoid. Seeds ca 0.5 mm long, elliptic, dark brown to red.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai (Doi Inthanon – type of Hypericum garrettii Craib: Garrett 67, lectotype -K, isolectotypes -BM E).


Distribution : Bhutan, Myanmar, China, India (type), Nepal, Vietnam.


Ecology : Primary evergreen forests, marshy ground, open grassy area, 1,850–2,595 m alt. Flowering: April–July; fruiting: September–October.


Vernacular : Bua thong (บัวทอง)(Chiang Mai)
