Description : Erect perenial herbs, 30–90 cm tall; stem and branches terete with conspicuous ridges, glabrous. Leaves with petioles 2.5–5(–8) cm long, glabrous; lamina (12–)18–30(–34) by (4–)6–10(–18) cm, usually in a rosette, elliptic or elliptic-oblong, glabrous, base cuneate, apex acute or obtuse, margins undulate; secondary veins 20–26-paired. Ocreae 4–7 cm long, scarious, glabrous, venation conspicuous with 11–16 veins, deciduous, apex oblique, without bristles. Inflorescences terminal, 20–30(–38) cm long, erect; inflorescence branches glabrous; leafy bracts (5–)6–13(–15) by 0.5–1(–2) cm, elliptic, apex acute or obtuse, margin undulate. Flowers 12–20(–28) in whorls; pedicels 2–3(–3.5) mm long, glabrous; without bracteole; ocreolae completely enclosing rachis, 0.8–1.2 mm long, hyaline, apex acute, margin entire without hispid hairs and bristles. Tepals white or pale green, ovate, apex obtuse or acute, without glandular dots, outer 3 1.2–1.8 by 0.4–0.8 mm, inner 3 1.5–2 by 0.8–1 mm, with 2–3 spines along margin and an ovate ambulla at middle part of outer surface, persistent. Stamens 6, in a single whorl, filaments white, 1.5–2 mm long, anthers white, elliptic. Styles 3, ca 1.4 mm long; stigmas fimbriate, white. Fruits with swollen perianth, with outer wings, 3–3.5 by 3–3.5 mm, brown.

Distribution : Europe (type), Russia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, China, Taiwan, Mongolia, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Java, the Philippines, Peninsular Malaysia, N America.


Ecology : In evergreen forests and along Mae Kong banks, ponds, 0–500 m alt.


Vernacular : Phak kat som (ผักกาดส้ม).
