Description : Erect or ascending herbs, 100–150 cm tall; stem and branches terete, glabrous. Leaves with petioles 1–1.5(–2) cm long; lamina (13.5–)14.5–18.5(–21) by (1.7–)2–2.6(–3) cm, ovate or elliptic-ovate, glabrous on both surfaces, punctate, base attenuate, apex acuminate or caudate, margins entire; secondary veins 20–24(–26)-paired. Ocreae cylindrical, (2.2–)2.6–3.5 cm long, scarious, glabrous, venation conspicuous, apex truncate or slightly oblique, without bristles. Inflorescences terminal and axillary, spicate panicle, (16–)21.5–30(–34.8) cm long, erect or slightly pendulous; inflorescence branches glabrous; side branches(4.5–)6–9(–10) cm long, cylindrical, dense-flowered, rachis inconspicuous; leafy bracts absent or 8–12(–15) by 0.5–1.5(–1.8) cm, ovate, apex acuminate or acute, margins entire. Flowers 4–5(–7) in an ocreola; pedicels 2.5–3.4(–4) mm long, glabrous; bracteoles (2.2–)2.5–3.4 mm long, hyaline; ocreolae completely enclosing rachis, 2.5–3(–4) mm long, glabrous, without glandular dots, apex obtuse or acute, margin entire without hispid hairs and bristles. Tepals 5, pink; lobes 1.8–2.5(–3) by 1.4–2(–2.2) mm, ovate, apex obtuse, without glandular dots, veins 3(–5); tube 0.8–1.2(–1.8) mm long, glandular nectaries (7–)8. Stamens 7(–8), in two whorls, pinkish or white, outer ones 1.3–2(–2.5) mm long, inner ones 2.4–3(–3.2) mm long; anthers white. Styles 2, 1.8–2.5(–2.8) mm long; stigmas clavate, white. Fruits with scarious perianth, lenticular, 2.3–2.6 by 1.8–2.1(–2.2) mm, shiny black.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok; NORTH-EASTERN: Sakon Nakhon, Khon Kaen; EASTERN: Chaiyaphum, Ubon Ratchathani; SOUTH-WESTERN: Phetchaburi; CENTRAL: Chai Nat.


Distribution : India (type), Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, China, Taiwan, Myanmar, Vietnam, Java, the Philippines, Australia, N & S America.


Ecology : Open marshy areas, 0–1,300 m alt.


Vernacular : Ueang (เอื้อง), phak pot (ผักปอด)(Chaiyaphum), phung phot (พุงโพด)(Phu Wiang), soi thap thim (สร้อยทับทิม).
