Description : Tree to 8 m; stem grey or brown. Leaves with petioles 5–10 mm long, moderately papillous; lamina orbicular to reniform, 10–15 by 14–18 cm, apex truncate or emarginate, base rounded or cordate, margin entire, coriaceous, glabrous, secondary veins 5–7-paired. Ocreae cylindrical, deciduous, 3–8 mm long, coriaceous at base, membranous at apex, glabrous, apex truncate and slightly oblique, without bristles. Inflorescences terminal, 15–20(–25) cm long, erect or pendulous; peduncle 1–5 cm long, moderately to densely puberulous. Staminate flowers 1–5(–7) in an ocreola; ocreolae tubular, completely enclosing rachis, 2–8 mm long, densely puberulous, apex slightly oblique. Tepals white; tube 2–3 mm long; lobes ca 1 mm long, cordate, apex acute. Stamens 8, in a single whorl; filaments white, ca 4 mm long; anthers 0.2–0.3 mm long, oblong and elliptic. Pistilate flowers 1(–3) in an ocreola; ocreolae tubular, completely enclosing rachis, 2–7 mm long, apex slightly oblique. Tepals white; styles 3, 1–1.5 mm long; stigmas capitate. Fruits with fleshy perianth, brown to black.
Thailand : Introduced and cultivated.
Distribution : Mexico, Caribbean (type), C & S America.
Ecology : Cultivated as an ornamental plant.
Vernacular : Sea grape (English); hu kwang thale (หูกวางทะเล); khrut thale (ครุฑทะเล)(Bangkok); a-ngun thale (องุ่นทะเล).
