Description : Tree, 25–40 m tall, buttressed; bark scaly. Indumentum shortly fine tufted tomentose on twigs, buds, stipules, petioles, secondary nerves below, midrib above, inflorescences and flower buds. Buds ovate, ca 5 by 3 mm. Stipules to ca 7 by 5 mm. Leaves ovate to oblong, 4–12 by 2–6 cm, slightly oblique, with sparsely tufted hairs on midrib on lower surface, shiny above, dried leaves bronze above, pale reddish brown below; base broadly cuneate, obtuse to truncate or very slightly cordate; apex acute, acuminate or cuspidate, tapering to ca 1 cm long; midrib depressed above; secondary nerves 14–22 on each side, slightly sunk above; domatia usually present, pore-like, pubescent; tertiary nerves densely scalariform; petioles 0.8–1.5 cm long. Inflorescences 4–10 cm long, indumentum sparse, lax, singly to irregularly branched; branchlets 1–2 cm long, bearing 3–5 flowers; flower buds elongate, 5–8 by 1–2 mm; pedicels 1–1.5 mm long. Calyx lobes ovate, 3 outer 1.2–2 by 1.5 mm, 2 inner ca 1 by 1 mm, densely puberulent. Petals linear, 1.2–1.5 by 0.1–0.2 cm, dark yellow, tinged dark red at base. Stamens 20–40, in 3 whorls; filaments to ca 1 mm long, occasionally with 1–2 bristles; anthers with 4 pollen sacs, oblong, ca 0.2–0.5 mm long; connective-appendages shorter than the anthers, with 3–4 long bristles, bristles to ca twice as long as anthers. Ovary ovoid, 1–1.8 by 0.8–1.3 mm including stylopodium, densely pubescent; style terete, ca 0.3 mm long; stigma obscurely trifid. Fruiting calyx lobes wing-like, saccate at base, thickened, enclosing to ca half of the nut, reddish when young, sparsely pubescent; 3 longer lobes 3.8–5 by 0.6–1.4 cm, narrow above the neck; 2 shorter lobes, 1.5–2.5 by 0.3–0.6 cm; fruit pedicels stout, 1–2 mm long. Nut ovoid, 1–1.5 by 0.7–0.8 cm, densely pubescent; style remnant to 5 mm long.

Distribution : Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, the Philippines (type).
Ecology : Evergreen forests, lowland to hillsides, ca 700 m alt. Flowering: February–November; fruiting: February–December.
Vernacular : Khem chang (เข็มช้าง)(Trang); choeng chan (เชิงชัน), chan (ชัน)(Southeastern); kalantan (กะลันตัน), krabak dam (กระบากดำ), yang dam (ยางดำ)(Narathiwat); lantan (ลันตัน)(Satun); saya daeng (สยาแดง)(Yala); teng tani (เต็งตานี)(Northern).
