Description : Shrub; stems caulescent, climbing or scandent, young branches inconspicuously ribbed, white sericeous. Leaves 5–12 by 3–6 cm, elliptic, apex acute or obtuse, base rounded, margins entire or serrate, subcoriaceous, upper surface puberulous without glands, lower surface sericeous with T-shaped hairs, lateral veins 7–11 pairs; petioles to 1 cm long. Inflorescences terminal and axillary, thyrsoid paniculate. Capitula narrowly campanulate, 10–15 mm long; involucres narrowly campanulate or slightly oblong-cylindrical, 3–4 by ca 3 mm diam.; phyllaries imbricate, green or purple apically, margins piliferous, outer surface arachnoid glandular, outer and middle phyllaries ovate, obtuse to rounded, inner obovate, apex acute or obtuse; receptacle convex, ca 1 mm diam., glabrous. Florets 4–5; corollas funnelform, purple or white, glandular, basal tubes 4.5–5.5 mm long, lobes 2–3 mm long; anthers 3–3.5 mm long, apical appendage acute, base obtuse; styles purple, 5.5–7 mm long, branches ca 2 mm long. Achenes ca 2 mm long, sparsely setuliferous and with capitate glands; inner pappus 5–6 mm long, persistent.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Phitsanulok; NORTH-EASTERN: Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani; EASTERN: Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Roi Et, Si Sa Ket; SOUTH-WESTERN: Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi; CENTRAL: Saraburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Nakhon Nayok, Nonthaburi, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (Bangkok); SOUTH-EASTERN: Prachin Buri, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat; PENINSULAR: Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat.


Distribution : America, Africa, Asia.


Ecology : Open areas in wetlands, including saline wetlands, 0–100 m alt. Flowering: October–May.


Vernacular : Khiao dan (เขี้ยวดาน), sar mak lod (ซ้าหมักหลอด), tan mon (ตานหม่อน), thao khi thao (เถาขี้เถ้า), li kuan yu (ลีกวนยู), thao wan lek (เถาวัลย์เหล็ก), khat mon (คัดมอญ), tan mon (ตาลหม่น).


Notes: Tarlmounia elliptica is characterised by having appressed T-shaped hairs on its leaf surfaces, a scandent habit and involucres without glands.
