Description : Perennial herbs. Vernal phase: leaves chiefly radical, broadly oblanceolate, broadly oblong or elliptic-ovate, 5–16 by 1.3–4.5 cm, apex obtuse or subacute, base truncate or attenuate, margins entire, upper surfaces sparsely pubescent, with curved long hairs, lower surfaces cobwebby lanate; petioles to 5 cm long, cobwebby lanate;scape 10–45 cm. Capitula ca 3.5 cm diam. at flowering; involucres obconic, ca 1.8 by 1–1.5 cm; phyllaries 3-seriate, imbricate, membranous, glabrate or arachnoid, outer shorter, linear, median broadly linear, apex obtuse, purplish, inner oblanceolate-linear, margins purplish; Ray florets 13–19, uniseriate, outer lips linear-oblanceolate, 1–1.2 by ca 1.5 mm, adaxial surfaces white, abaxial surfaces reddish purple. Disc florets: corollas 10–13 mm long, gradually tapered below. Achenes 10–12 mm long, 5-ribbed, hairy, strongly attenuate into beak, beaks 5–6 mm long; pappus ca 11 mm long. Autumnal phase: stems to 60 cm tall, simple; cauline leaves linear, 10–22 mm long. Capitula: involucres tubular, ca 1.5 by 0.5 cm; phyllaries 5-seriate, outer linear, obtuse, cobwebby abaxially. Achenes ca 6 mm long; pappus 11 mm long.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai (Doi Muan Chang Sa, Doi Suthep, Bo Luang, Bo Luang-Omkoi, Wang Tao), Lampang (Mae Huat); NORTH-EASTERN: Phetchabun (Ban Phu Hi), Loei (Phu Kradueng).


Distribution : Africa (Yemen – type), Asia Minor, Himalayas, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, China (Yunnan), Laos, Vietnam.


Ecology : Poor sandy soil in secondary forests and upper mixed deciduous forests, 400–1,300 m alt. Flowering of vernal phase: April–June, of autumnal phase: October–November.


Vernacular : Wan khang khok (ว่านคางคก)(Chiang Mai); wan khang khak (ว่านคางคาก)(Chiang Mai).


Notes: The achenes of this species are quite different from those of E Asiatic Gerbera mentioned above.
