Description : Shrub, tree or small tree, 2–7 m tall, ca 10 cm dbh; stem erect, nearly glabrous. Leaves cauline, petiolate, chartaceous; blade oblong, 10–13 by 7–13 cm, margins coarsely mucronate-toothed, curly puberulous, upper surfaces glabrescent, lower surfaces curly puberulent on veins, petioles 2–3 cm long; upper leaves gradually smaller, subsessile, ovate, mucronate-serrate; uppermost leaves bract-like, 2.5–5.0 mm long. Inflorescences in glomerules, with several to many, 5 or 14, congested capitula; peduncles subsessile or short. Capitula glabrous; involucres narrowly tubular, 14–17 by ca 5 mm; phyllaries 7-seriate, imbricate, outer ovate, 1 mm long, scarious, purplish, longitudinally striate, median oblong, inner linear-oblong. Florets 5 per capitulum; corollas narrow, tubular, 17–18 mm long, gradually tapered below, apex deeply 5-cleft, lobes 10–11 mm long. Achenes cylindrical, 8.5–9 mm long, densely brownish setuliferous; pappus of capillary bristles, ca 11 mm long, brownish white.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai (Mae Tuen, Doi Ang Khang, Doi Suthep, Doi Pui, Pangbot-Khun Khlong, Doi Chiang Dao, Doi Inthanon), Tak (Doi Musoe); SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi (Song Tho).
Distribution : Burma (type), China (Guizhou, Yunnan), Vietnam.
Ecology : Grassy slopes of the mountainous areas in open evergreen forests, 600–1,800 m alt. Flowering: September–October.
Vernacular : Ya kae luang (ยาแก้หลวง), nio mue ton (นิ้วมือต้น)(Northern).
Notes: Most plants of this species are shrubs 3 to 4 m tall but some are trees to 7 m tall.
