Description : Perennial herb, 5–30 cm tall, from thick rhizomes; vegetative stems elongate, with a tuft of leaves at apex; flowering-stems 0.4–1 m tall, branched above, rarely cobwebby, branches ending in inflorescences; bracts linear. Leaves spathulate, apex rounded in outline, 3.5–8 by 1–3 cm, pinnately lobed, apex toothed, base truncate, puberulous or glabrescent above and below, lower leaves usually withering before flowering, median leaves subsessile, blade cuneate-spathulate in outline, 4–8 by 1–2 cm, pinnately partite, or pinnately divided, apex 3–4 toothed. Inflorescences in panicles; peduncles 0.5–3 mm long. Capitula disciform, slightly lustrous; involucres ovoid-globose or ellipsoid, ca 2 by 1.5 mm diam.; phyllaries 4-seriate, imbricate, outer ovate, glabrous, apex obtuse, inner elliptic, apex rounded; receptacle flattened, naked. Marginal florets 8–13 per capitulum, fertile; corollas yellow, filiform, ca 1 mm long. Disc florets 6–12 per capitulum, staminate, sterile; corollas yellow, tubular, ca 1.5 mm long, basal tube obscure, ca 0.4 mm long. Achenes oblong, dark brown, 0.8–1 mm.


Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai (Bo Luang to Om Koi, Mae Sanam, Mae Sariang to Chom Thong, Doi Chiang Dao), Tak (Doi Hua Mot).


Distribution : C Asia from Afghanistan to Japan (type), through Myanmar, China (Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangdong, Hubei, Shandong), Korea, northern part of SE Asia (Vietnam) and the Philippines.


Ecology : Seasonally marshy ground or dry slopes in light forests of pines, oaks, and dipterocarps, 900–1,150 m alt. Flowering: August–November.
