Description : Perennial herb, 30–90 cm tall, polygamo-dioecious; rhizome erect, stems loosely white-woolly, rusty pubescent in age. Leaves numerous, all cauline, blade lanceolate to linear, 3–12 by 0.3–2 cm, apex acute or acuminate, base narrowed, clasping stem, margins entire, often revolute, upper surfaces less pubescent than lower surfaces or glabrous. Inflorescences a branched, broad corymb; peduncles usually short, sometimes to 2 cm long. Capitula of 2 types; one with mostly pistillate-florets, another with mostly staminate-florets, ca 1 cm or less diam.; involucres of pistillate capitula subglobose, ca 5 by 4–6 mm, woolly, dry, scarious, pearly-white, sometimes with a small dark basal spot, base only woolly, of staminate capitula cylindrical-campanulate, ca 5 by 4 mm; phyllaries 8–10-seriate, imbricate, white, brownish at base, outer short, ovate or oblong, median oblong–elliptic, 4.3–5 mm long, apex obtuse to acuminate, inner lanceolate, unguiculate; receptacle fimbrillate. Female florets many per capitulum; corollas filiform, 2.5–3.5 mm long. Male florets ca 35 per capitulum; corollas tubular, 3–3.5 mm long. Achenes oblong, ca 0.7 mm long, minute papillose; pappus of distinct capillary bristles, 3.5–4 mm long.
Thailand : NORTHERN: Chiang Mai (Doi Suthep, Doi Pui, Doi Chiang Dao, Doi Inthanon, Mae Pau, Doi Chang, Doi Khun Huai Pong).
Distribution : E Asia, India (Punjab) through SE China to Japan and N America (type).
Ecology : Grassy slopes in old clearings, clayey soils at edges of evergreen forests, 1,000–2,550 m alt. Flowering: August–September.
Vernacular : Khao tok (ข้าวตอก)(Central, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Loei, Northern); nat doi (หนาดดอย)(Northern).
